Day of Trumpets

The purpose of this study is to show the relevance of the day of Trumpets. We will examine the scriptures to reveal what it represented in the days of old, what it represents today, and in the future.

YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, “Speak to the children of Yisra’el, saying, ’In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, shall be a solemn rest to you, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. (Leviticus 23:23-24 RNEB)

In the first day of the seventh month on the Hebrew calendar we are to have a Sabbath of rest, a memorial of the blowing of trumpets, which includes a holy convocation.

YOU SHALL DO NO REGULAR WORK; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to YAH.’” (Leviticus 23:25 RNEB)

No servile work is to be done on this day.

YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, MAKE YOU TWO TRUMPETS OF SILVER; OF BEATEN WORK SHALL YOU MAKE THEM: AND YOU SHALL USE THEM FOR THE CALLING OF THE CONGREGATION, AND FOR THE JOURNEYING OF THE CAMPS. When they shall blow them, all the congregation shall gather themselves to you at the door of the tent of meeting. If they blow but one, then the princes, the heads of the thousands of Yisra’el, shall gather themselves to you. When you blow an alarm, the camps that lie on the east side shall take their journey. When you blow an alarm the second time, the camps that lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys. But when the assembly is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but you shall not sound an alarm. The sons of Aharon, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and they shall be to you FOR A STATUTE FOREVER THROUGHOUT YOUR GENERATIONS. WHEN YOU GO TO WAR IN YOUR LAND AGAINST THE ADVERSARY WHO OPPRESSES YOU, THEN YOU SHALL SOUND AN ALARM WITH THE TRUMPETS; AND YOU SHALL BE REMEMBERED BEFORE YAH YOUR ELOHIM, AND YOU SHALL BE SAVED FROM YOUR ENEMIES. Also in the day of your gladness, and in your set feasts, and in the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be to you for a memorial before your Elohim: I am YAH your Elohim. (Numbers 10:1-10 RNEB)

The trumpets were memorialized and used for the following reasons.

  1. The gathering of the people.
  2. Journeying of the camps.
  3. Before going to war.

The trumpets were used to gather the people, move them forward, and before going to battle.

It shall happen, when all these things are come on you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you shall call them to mind among all the nations, where YAH your Elohim has driven you, and shall return to YAH your Elohim, and shall obey his voice according to all that I command you this day, you and your children, with all your heart, and with all your soul; that then YAH your Elohim will turn your captivity, and have compassion on you, and will return and gather you from all the peoples, where YAH your Elohim has scattered you. If [any of] your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of the heavens, from there will YAH your Elohim gather you, and from there he will bring you back: (Deuteronomy 30:1-4 RNEB)
A shoot will come out of the stock of Yishai, and a branch out of his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of YAH will rest on him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of YAH. His delight will be in the fear of YAH. He will not judge by the sight of his eyes, neither decide by the hearing of his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the poor, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked. Righteousness will be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his waist. The wolf will live with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the young goat; The calf, the young lion, and the fattened calf together; and a little child will lead them. The cow and the bear will graze. Their young ones will lie down together. The lion will eat straw like the ox. The nursing child will play near a cobra’s hole, and the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den. They will not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of YAH, as the waters cover the sea. It will happen in that day that the nations will seek the root of Yishai, who stands as a banner of the peoples; and his resting place will be glorious. IT WILL HAPPEN IN THAT DAY THAT YAH WILL SET HIS HAND AGAIN THE SECOND TIME TO RECOVER THE REMNANT THAT IS LEFT OF HIS PEOPLE from Ashur, from Egypt, from Patros, from Kush, from `Elam, from Shin`ar, from Chamat, and from the islands of the sea. He will set up a banner for the nations, and will assemble the outcasts of Yisra’el, AND GATHER TOGETHER THE DISPERSED OF JUDAH FROM THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH. (Isaiah 11:1-12 RNEB)

Remember, trumpets were used for the gathering of the people.

In that day, YAH with his hard and great and strong sword will punish livyatan, the fleeing serpent, and livyatan the twisted serpent; and he will kill the dragon that is in the sea. In that day, sing to her, “A pleasant vineyard! I, YAH, am its keeper. I will water it every moment. Lest anyone damage it, I will keep it night and day. Wrath is not in me, but if I should find briers and thorns, I would do battle! I would march on them and I would burn them together. Or else let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me. Let him make peace with me.” In days to come, Jacob will take root. Yisra’el will blossom and bud. They will fill the surface of the world with fruit. Has he struck them as he struck those who struck them? Or are they killed like those who killed them were killed? In measure, when you send them away, you contend with them. He has removed them with his rough blast in the day of the east wind. Therefore, by this the lawlessness of Jacob will be forgiven, and this is all the fruit of taking away his sin: that he makes all the stones of the altar as chalk stones that are beaten in pieces, so that the Asherim and the incense altars shall rise no more. For the fortified city is solitary, a habitation deserted and forsaken, like the wilderness. The calf will feed there, and there he will lie down, and consume its branches. When its boughs are withered, they will be broken off. The women will come and set them on fire, for they are a people of no understanding. Therefore he who made them will not have compassion on them, and he who formed them will show them no favor. It will happen in that day, that YAH will thresh from the flowing stream of the Euphrates to the brook of Egypt; AND YOU WILL BE GATHERED ONE BY ONE, CHILDREN OF YISRA’EL. IT WILL HAPPEN IN THAT DAY THAT A GREAT TRUMPET WILL BE BLOWN; AND THOSE WHO WERE READY TO PERISH IN THE LAND OF ASHUR, AND THOSE WHO WERE OUTCASTS IN THE LAND OF EGYPT, SHALL COME; AND THEY WILL WORSHIP YAH IN THE HOLY MOUNTAIN AT YERUSHALAYIM. (Isaiah 27:1-13 RNEB)
But immediately after the oppression of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken; and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. HE WILL SEND OUT HIS ANGELS WITH A GREAT SOUND OF A TRUMPET, AND THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER HIS CHOSEN ONES FROM THE FOUR WINDS, FROM ONE END OF THE SKY TO THE OTHER. (Matthew 24:29-31 RNEB)

The day of trumpets is a memorial of the gathering of the people, the moving of the camp, the prelude to war, and a reminder that Yisrael will be gathered in the future at the return of the Messiah.

For this we tell you by the word of YAH, that we who are alive, who are left to the coming of the Master, WILL IN NO WAY PRECEDE THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN ASLEEP. (1 Thessalonians 4:15 RNEB)

The dead in the anointed will receive there reward first.

For the Master himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the chief angel, AND WITH ELOHIM’S TRUMPET. The dead in the Anointed will rise first, then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Master in the air. So we will be with the Master forever. (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 RNEB)

The trumpet not only marks the gathering of the dead and those who are left in the anointed, but when the Messiah’s feet touch the ground on the mount it’s also time for battle.

Now I say this, brothers, that flesh and blood can’t inherit the Kingdom of Elohim; neither does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, AT THE LAST TRUMPET. FOR THE TRUMPET WILL SOUND, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. (1 Corinthians 15:50-52 RNEB)

This happens at the last trumpet.

THE SEVEN ANGELS WHO HAD THE SEVEN TRUMPETS PREPARED THEMSELVES TO SOUND. The first sounded, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. One third of the earth was burnt up, and one third of the trees were burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. The second angel sounded, and something like a great burning mountain was thrown into the sea. One third of the sea became blood, and one third of the living creatures which were in the sea died. One third of the ships were destroyed. (Revelation 8:6-9 RNEB)
THE FOURTH ANGEL SOUNDED, and one third of the sun was struck, and one third of the moon, and one third of the stars; so that one third of them would be darkened, and the day wouldn’t shine for one third of it, and the night in the same way. (Revelation 8:12 RNEB)
THE FIFTH ANGEL SOUNDED, and I saw a star from the sky which had fallen to the earth. The key to the pit of the abyss was given to him. (Revelation 9:1 RNEB)
saying to THE SIXTH ANGEL WHO HAD ONE TRUMPET, “Free the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates!” (Revelation 9:14 RNEB)

Everytime a trumpet is blown a vile is poured, this is the wrath of Elohim.

I heard a loud voice out of the temple, saying to the seven angels, “Go and pour out the seven bowls of the wrath of Elohim on the earth!” (Revelation 16:1 RNEB)

The Most High gave us the day of trumpets to observe because of the many events that took place in accordance with the blowing of trumpets and the many events that will still take place in the future. It’s a memorial of the past and a reminder of the future.

One Response to "Day of Trumpets"

  1. Berachyah says:

No where in Lev 23:24 does it denote blowing any trumpet/s as it would have said “Shofar/im”. However, we do find the word “Teruah” which predominately is used throughout Scripture for the sound of the human voice as in a joyful shouting. I also do not see anything in this verse that would denote a “Feast” as we would have expected to see the word “Chag”.
