Gey Hinnom, The Eternal Fire

The purpose of this study is to understand what will happen to those who are found unrighteous in the eyes of Elohim. Will they be tormented in the eternal fires of hell forever as some scriptures seem to suggest and many religious leaders have taught for the past sixteen hundred years, or is there another fate for the wicked revealed in the word of Elohim? During our analysis of this topic, we will answer the following questions.

  • What do the old testament prophets say about eternal torment?
  • What is the eternal fire spoken about in the new testament?
  • What happens to the unrighteous at death?
  • Will Elohim send the wicked to a place of eternal torment?
  • Who are the wicked or unrighteous?
  • What is the first and second death?
  • By what standard will everyone be judged?

We will uncover the truth regarding hell fire and the eternal flame by using both biblical and secular documentation to understand this subject and the coming judgment of YAH.

“Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day. A certain beggar, named El’azar, was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Yes, even the dogs came and licked his sores. It happened that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried. In the grave, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and El’azar at his bosom. (Luke 16:19-23 RNEB)

Many have been taught that hell is the place of torment, that it’s where the wicked ones go to be punished for their transgressions. However, when we reference the word hell in Hebrew, we find the word Sheol, which means the grave. In the grave there is no thought, works, emotions, or feelings, there is absolutely nothing. When we look at the Greek translation for Luke 16:23, we see that the translation for hell is Hades, which represents the underworld in Greek mythology, there are gods of the underworld known as Hades and Pluto. Consequently, we are led to believe that Yahshua is apparently giving a parable about individuals that have gone to the underworld and are alive. We are also looking at a poor man named Lazarus who died and went to a place called the bosom of Abraham.

He cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send El’azar, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue! For I am in anguish in this flame.’ (Luke 16:24 RNEB)

Did the rich man cry to father Abraham because he was in Hades? The prior verse said they both died, which in Hebrew means to cease to exist, it’s final. In the Greek culture, they believe there is life immediately after death, a place where you go. We will attempt to do an exhaustive search of old and new testament scriptures to find the truth regarding this matter.

“But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and El’azar, in like manner, bad things. But now here he is comforted and you are in anguish. Besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’ “He said, ‘I ask you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house; for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, so they won’t also come into this place of torment.’ “But Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moshe and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’ “He said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ “He said to him, ‘IF THEY DON’T LISTEN TO MOSHE AND THE PROPHETS, NEITHER WILL THEY BE PERSUADED IF ONE RISES FROM THE DEAD.'” (Luke 16:25-31 RNEB)

The lesson of this story is we need to listen and follow the law and the prophets, which represents all the oracles of Elohim. Many religious leaders use this parable to have us believe that when the wicked die there going to be placed in a lake of fire where they burn forever and the righteous will be able to see them for eternity. What do you think is worse, burning in a lake of fire or having to watch your loved ones burn there for eternity?

The accepted present day theology pertaining to hell comes from the Greek Christian Scriptures.

But if they don’t have self-control, let them marry. For it’s better to marry than to burn. (1 Corinthians 7:9 RNEB)

Note, this says “to burn”, does that mean to burn forever or would that be making an assumption?

Lets look at a series of scriptures that are used to validate an eternal burning of flesh after death and judgment.

Therefore thus says YAH Elohim: Behold, my anger and my wrath shall be poured out on this place, on man, and on animal, and on the trees of the field, and on the fruit of the ground; and IT SHALL BURN, AND SHALL NOT BE QUENCHED. (Jeremiah 7:20 RNEB)

This is speaking about the City of Yerushalayim, it says it shall burn and not be quenched, however do we see the city still burning today?

Even as Sedom and `Amorah, and the cities around them, having, in the same way as these, given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, SUFFERING THE PUNISHMENT OF ETERNAL FIRE. (Jude 1:7 RNEB)

Do we still see Sedom and Amorah burning today in everlasting fire? We do know it was destroyed and ruins of ash have been found, however it’s not burning now. Therefore, what we need to do is continue to search the scriptures to find what this really means.

But if you will not listen to me to make the day of Sabbath holy, and not to bear a burden and enter in at the gates of Yerushalayim on the day of Sabbath; THEN WILL I KINDLE A FIRE IN THE GATES OF IT, AND IT SHALL DEVOUR THE PALACES OF YERUSHALAYIM, AND IT SHALL NOT BE QUENCHED. (Jeremiah 17:27 RNEB)

We know at this time Yisrael didn’t keep the Sabbath ordinances, so lets look at the fire that won’t be quenched.

Now in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of king Nevukhadnetzar, king of Babel, came Nevuzar’adan the captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babel, to Yerushalayim. HE BURNT THE HOUSE OF YAH, AND THE KING’S HOUSE; AND ALL THE HOUSES OF YERUSHALAYIM, EVEN EVERY GREAT HOUSE, BURNT HE WITH FIRE. (2 Kings 25:8-9 RNEB)

This is the fulfillment of what was prophesied, YAH said he would kindle a fire in Yerushalayim. So, were back to the same question, is Yerushalayim still burning?

All the army of the Kasdim, who were [with] the captain of the guard, broke down the walls of Yerushalayim round about. (2 Kings 25:10 RNEB)

What we find in the old testament is that destruction by fire had a different definition and purpose than what modern day theologians teach the meaning is in the new testament.

Today’s prevalent theological teachings came from Gnostics who became called Christians in the early second century. Their doctrine is a variation of different religions and various philosophical and theological thoughts. Gnostic means relating to knowledge, especially esoteric mystical knowledge.

As we study from Genesis to Malachi we see the Hebrews of antiquity had an understanding of what would happen to those who walked unrighteously after they were dead and buried. However, when we transition to the new testament we find that there’s a different meaning being applied for the final destruction of those who walk unrighteously.

whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff WITH UNQUENCHABLE FIRE.” (Luke 3:17 RNEB)

The chaff are the unrighteous people. The wheat are the righteous people.

But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment; and whoever shall say to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing!’ shall be in danger of the council; and whoever shall say, ‘You fool!’ SHALL BE IN DANGER OF THE FIRE OF HELL. (Matthew 5:22 RNEB)

Hell [Greek: Gehenna] – a deep, narrow glen to the south of Yerushalayim, where the idolatrous Jews offered their children in sacrifice to Molech (2 Chr. 28:3; 33:6; Jer. 7:31; 19:2-6). This valley afterwards became the common receptacle for all the refuse of the city. Here the dead bodies of animals and of criminals, and all kinds of filth, were cast and consumed by a fire that was always kept burning. This eventually became the image of the place of everlasting destruction. In this sense it is used by our Lord in Matt. 5:22, 29, 30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15, 33; Mark 9:43, 45, 47; Luke 12:5. In these passages, and also in James 3:6, the word is uniformly rendered “hell,”

And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. (Matthew 5:29 KJV)

The Hebrew word for grave is Sheol, so Yahshua is not speaking of Hades or hell. He can’t be speaking of Hades, why would a Hebrew Rabbi reference Greek mythology?

If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehinnom. (Matthew 5:30 RNEB)

It would be prudent to take the time to understand the new testament from a Hebrew point of view rather than one shrouded in Greek philosophy and mythology. The scriptures were written by Hebrews not Greeks, so a proper understanding can only come from the cultural viewpoint of the Hebrews.

Whoever will cause one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if he was thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around his neck. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having your two hands to go into Gehinnom, INTO THE UNQUENCHABLE FIRE, (Mark 9:42-43 RNEB)
‘where their worm doesn’t die, and the FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.’ (Mark 9:44 RNEB)

It appears worms are burned eternally also.

If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life lame, rather than having your two feet to be cast into Gehinnom, THE FIRE THAT WILL NEVER BE QUENCHED– (Mark 9:45 RNEB)

These verses are not literally talking about plucking out our eye or cutting off our hand. The eye represents discernment, the hand represents our works, and the foot represents our walk. Consequently, what he’s saying is if we have something keeping us from serving YAH, anything about ourselves or within our character it needs to be cut off. It doesn’t matter if it’s a lack of discernment, actions, or behavior.

‘where their worm doesn’t die, and the fire is not quenched.’ If your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out. It is better for you to enter into the Kingdom of Elohim with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Gehinnom of fire, ‘WHERE THEIR WORM DOESN’T DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.’ For everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt. (Mark 9:46-49 RNEB)

So far every time we have seen the word hell used by Yahshua it was always being translated from the Greek word Gehenna. This is not a word we will find in the old testament, Yahshua came to confirm, elaborate, and express those things that were written at an earlier time. The things spoken of by Hebrews in the old testament were written in the Hebrew language not the Greek language. Therefore, a proper understanding of the Hebrew language and culture is required to understand what Yahshua was saying.

You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehinnom? (Matthew 23:33 RNEB)
Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to DESTROY BOTH SOUL AND BODY IN GEHENNA. (Matthew 10:28 RNEB)

Destroy – To ruin completley; Spoil; Destroyed by fire, burned up; To tear down or break up; Demolish; To do away with; Put an end to;

Ruin – Total destruction or disintegration either physically, morally, socially or economically; A cause of total destruction; To destroy completely, demolish;

Gehenna is not the word that Yahshua would have used as a Hebrew, neither is the word hell. Will establish Yahshua’s thoughts on this matter using the scriptures.

So I came to Yerushalayim, and was there three days. I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my Elohim put into my heart to do for Yerushalayim; neither was there any animal with me, except the animal that I rode on. I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the jackal’s well, and to the dung gate, and viewed the walls of Yerushalayim, which were broken down, and THE GATES OF IT WERE CONSUMED WITH FIRE. (Nehemiah 2:11-13 RNEB)

The gates of waste were consumed by fire.

In the next verse Nehemiah had asked the king if he could go back and rebuild the city of his fathers, Yerushalayim. The King said it was ok so Nehemiah and his entourage are heading back to rebuild the city.

The valley gate repaired Chanun, and the inhabitants of Zanoach; they built it, and set up the doors of it, the bolts of it, and the bars of it, and one thousand cubits of the wall to THE DUNG GATE. The dung gate repaired Malkiyah the son of Rechav, the ruler of the district of Beit-Hakkerem; he built it, and set up the doors of it, the bolts of it, and the bars of it. The spring gate repaired Shallun the son of Kolchozeh, the ruler of the district of Mitzpah; he built it, and covered it, and set up the doors of it, the bolts of it, and the bars of it, and the wall of the pool of Shelach by the king’s garden, even to the stairs that go down from the city of David. (Nehemiah 3:13-15 RNEB)
Behold, the days come, says YAH, that the city shall be built to YAH from the tower of Chanan’el to the gate of the corner. The measuring line shall go out further straight onward to the hill Garev, and shall turn about to Go`ah. THE WHOLE VALLEY OF THE DEAD BODIES AND OF THE ASHES, and all the fields to the brook Kidron, to the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy to YAH; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more forever. (Jeremiah 31:38-40 RNEB)

Valley – in Hebrew is Gey. Lets see what the name of the valley is.

He defiled Tofet, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molekh. (2 Kings 23:10 RNEB)

The valley of the children of Hinnom, remember “valley” in Hebrew is Gey so this is Gey Hinnom. He’s defiling Gey Hinnom.

He took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, at the entrance of the house of YAH, by the chamber of Netan-Melekh the officer, who was in the court; and he burned the chariots of the sun with fire. The altars that were on the roof of the upper chamber of Achaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Menasheh had made in the two courts of the house of YAH, did the king break down, and beat [them] down from there, and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron. The high places that were before Yerushalayim, which were on the right hand of the mountain of corruption, which Shlomo the king of Yisra’el had built for `Ashoret the abomination of the Tzidonim, and for Kemosh the abomination of Mo’av, and for Milkom the abomination of the children of `Ammon, DID THE KING DEFILE. He broke in pieces the pillars, and cut down the Asherim, AND FILLED THEIR PLACES WITH THE BONES OF MEN. (2 Kings 23:11-14 RNEB)

This Hebrew Yisraelite King didn’t just go in and break down the alters and images, he placed carcasses of dead bodies in the valley of Hinnom. This was significant because dead bodies would have defiled the place. This is because under Sinaitic law a dead body is unclean, so a Hebrew would never bring any part of a dead body to a holy place because it would defile the place, an unclean place can’t be holy.

For his burning place has long been ready. Yes, for the king it is made ready. He has made its pyre deep and large with fire and much wood. YAH’s breath, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it. (Isaiah 30:33 RNEB)
For the children of Judah have done that which is evil in my sight, says YAH: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it. They have built the high places of Tofet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, TO BURN THEIR SONS AND THEIR DAUGHTERS IN THE FIRE; WHICH I DIDN’T COMMAND, NOR DID IT COME INTO MY MIND. (Jeremiah 7:30-31 RNEB)

Lets review some secular references to clarify the meanings of some of the words we have been dealing with.

Hell is not a translation, it’s a word that has been inserted by translators in the new testament because of there preconceived ideas about a place of eternal torment.

This is why we cannot find the practices and methodologies supported in the old testament that we read about in the new testament. There are many old covenant Hebrews that refuse to read the new testament on account of the pagan influence in the words and meanings used in the translation not to mention the words that have been added or removed by various redactors.

This idea is fast loosing ground as modern translators realize that Hebrew words like Sheol simply meant the grave to the original inspired writers of the scripture. The translators are still very shy though and in many instances have left the word Sheol untranslated in modern bible versions, this is because they can see this word obviously means the grave and not the traditional meaning, rather than admit this and the folly of using the original word hell in the past they have just left the Hebrew word Sheol untranslated many times, leaving the readers to make up their own minds.

Hell Historically

Polybius, the ancient historian, says: “Since the multitude is ever fickle, full of lawless desires, irrational passions and violence, there is no other way to keep them in order but by the fear and terror of the invisible world; on which account our ancestors seem to me to have acted judiciously, when they contrived to bring into the popular belief these notions of the gods, and of the infernal regions.” B. vi 56.

Livy, the celebrated historian, speaks of it in the same spirit; and he praises the wisdom of Numa, because he invented the fear of the gods, as “a most efficacious means of governing an ignorant and barbarous populace.” Hist., I 19.

Strabo, the geographer, says: “The multitude are restrained from vice by the punishments the gods are said to inflict upon offenders, and by those terrors and threatenings which certain dreadful words and monstrous forms imprint upon their minds…For it is impossible to govern the crowd of women, and all the common rabble, by philosophical reasoning, and lead them to piety, holiness and virtue – but this must be done by superstition, or the fear of the gods, by means of fables and wonders; for the thunder, the aegis, the trident, the torches (of the Furies), the dragons, &c., are all fables, as is also all the ancient theology. These things the legislators used as scarecrows to terrify the childish multitude.” Geog., B. I

Timaeus Locrus, the Pythagorean, after stating that the doctrine of rewards and punishments after death is necessary to society, proceeds as follows: “For as we sometimes cure the body with unwholesome remedies, when such as are most wholesome produce no effect, so we restrain those minds with false relations, which will not be persuaded by the truth. There is a necessity, therefore, of instilling the dread of those foreign torments: as that the soul changes its habitation; that the coward is ignominiously thrust into the body of a woman; the murderer imprisoned within the form of a savage beast; the vain and inconstant changed into birds, and the slothful and ignorant into fishes.”

Plato, in his commentary on Timaeus, fully endorses what he says respecting the fabulous invention of these foreign torments. And Strabo says that “Plato and the Brahmins of India invented fables concerning the future judgments of hell” (Hades). And Chrysippus blames Plato for attempting to deter men from wrong by frightful stories of future punishments.

Plato himself is exceedingly inconsistent, sometimes adopting, even in his serious discourses, the fables of the poets, and at other times rejecting them as utterly false, and giving too frightful views of the invisible world. Sometimes, he argues, on social grounds, that they are necessary to restrain bad men from wickedness and crime, and then again he protests against them on political grounds, as intimidating the citizens, and making cowards of the soldiers, who, believing these things, are afraid of death, and do not therefore fight well.

But all this shows in what light he regarded them; not as truths, certainly, but as fictions, convenient in some cases, but difficult to manage in others. Seneca says: “Those things which make the infernal regions terrible, the darkness, the prison, the river of flaming fire, the judgment seat, &c., are all a fable, with which the poets amuse themselves, and by them agitate us with vain terrors.” Sextus Empiricus calls them “poetic fables of hell;” and Cicero speaks of them as “silly absurdities and fables” (ineptiis ac fabulis). Aristotle. “It has been handed down in mythical form from earliest times to posterity, that there are gods, and that the divine (Deity) compasses all nature. All beside this has been added, after the mythical style, for the purpose of persuading the multitude, and for the interests of the laws, and the advantage of the state.” Neander’s Church Hist., I, p. 7. 11

The above quotes were taken from: The Origin and History of the Doctrine of Endless Punishment by Dr. Thomas Thayer.

This is the primary reason why if we want a clear understanding of what’s going to occur with the wicked ones in the last day were going to have to consult the oracles of Elohim. This does not mean obtaining one of the many books written by today’s religious leaders that hold pagan and Gnostic ideals.

a deep, narrow ravine separating Mount Zion from the so-called “Hill of Evil Counsel.” It took its name from “some ancient hero, the son of Hinnom.” It is first mentioned in Josh. 15:8. It had been the place where the idolatrous Jews burned their children alive to Moloch and Baal. A particular part of the valley was called Tophet, or the “fire-stove,” where the children were burned. After the Exile, in order to show their abhorrence of the locality, the Jews made this valley the receptacle of the offal of the city, for the destruction of which a fire was, as is supposed, KEPT CONSTANTLY BURNING THERE. The Jews associated with this valley these two ideas, (1) that of the sufferings of the victims that had there been sacrificed; and (2) that of filth and corruption. It became thus to the popular mind a symbol of the abode of the wicked hereafter. IT CAME TO SIGNIFY HELL AS THE PLACE OF THE WICKED. “It might be shown by infinite examples that the Jews expressed hell, or the place of the damned, by this word. THE WORD GEHENNA [THE GREEK CONTRACTION OF HINNOM] WAS NEVER USED IN THE TIME OF YAHSHUA IN ANY OTHER SENSE THAN TO DENOTE THE PLACE OF FUTURE PUNISHMENT. “’Gehenna’ or ’The valley of the son of Hinnom’ which is what the Greek word means, was the rubbish tip outside of Yerushalayim in the time of Jesus which was also used to burn the bodies of criminals who had suffered capital punishment. Most of the occurrences of the word ’hell’ in the New Testament refer to this ’place of burning’ outside of Yerushalayim. About this fact there can be no question. In this sense the word is used eleven times in our Messiah’s discourses (Matt. 23:33; Luke 12:5; Matt. 5:22, etc.). (Easton’s Bible Dictionary)

He set another parable before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field, (Matthew 13:24 RNEB)

Yahshua’s parables are actually accounts of what has and will take place, however we must not forget their parables, and he uses analogies and things of this nature to make his point.

but while people slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel weeds also among the wheat, and went away. But when the blade sprang up and brought forth fruit, then the darnel weeds appeared also. The servants of the householder came and said to him, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where did this darnel come from?’ “He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and gather them up?’ “But he said, ‘No, lest perhaps while you gather up the darnel weeds, you root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the harvest time I will tell the reapers, “FIRST, GATHER UP THE DARNEL WEEDS, AND BIND THEM IN BUNDLES TO BURN THEM; BUT GATHER THE WHEAT INTO MY BARN.”‘” (Matthew 13:25-30 RNEB)
Then Yahshua sent the multitudes away, and went into the house. His disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the darnel weeds of the field.” He answered them, “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the children of the Kingdom; and the darnel weeds are the children of the evil one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. As therefore the darnel weeds are gathered up and burned with fire; so will it be at the end of this age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather out of his Kingdom ALL THINGS THAT CAUSE STUMBLING, AND THEM WHICH DO LAW-LESS-NESS, (Matthew 13:36-41 RNEB)

In this parable the righteous are represented by the wheat, the darnel or tares are the wicked ones, the children of Satan. The darnel will be separated from the wheat by messengers, angels, the way the darnel will be distinguished from the wheat is they will be the ones walking in lawlessness. If there is no law, how can there be lawless people at the end of the age?

and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and the gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine forth like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. HE WHO HAS EARS TO HEAR, LET HIM HEAR. (Matthew 13:42-43 RNEB)

At this point we have established a foundation to present a better understanding of Hebraic words and the culture. Gey Hinnom is the valley Yahshua referenced, and he specifically talked about the lawless going to this place, but what we saw in Gey Hinnom is dead bodies or more specifically ashes and destruction. We will further confirm these conclusions through the prophets.

Will YAH destroy the wicked by burning their bodies or will he destroy them by tormenting them forever by fire why they are alive? The popular Christian concept is the wicked will be thrown in the lake of fire and burn in everlasting torment.

His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, BUT THE CHAFF HE WILL BURN UP WITH UNQUENCHABLE FIRE.” (Matthew 3:12 RNEB)

Burn means to consume with fire until it becomes ash. Unquenchable fire means a fire that cannot be put out, it does not mean that the person will live forever, which we will see more clearly as we proceed.

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! Woe to those who are mighty to drink wine, and champions at mixing strong drink; who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice for the innocent! THEREFORE AS THE TONGUE OF FIRE DEVOURS THE STUBBLE, AND AS THE DRY GRASS SINKS DOWN IN THE FLAME, SO THEIR ROOT SHALL BE AS ROTTENNESS, AND THEIR BLOSSOM SHALL GO UP AS DUST; BECAUSE THEY HAVE REJECTED THE LAW OF YAH OF ARMIES, AND DESPISED THE WORD OF THE HOLY ONE OF YISRA’EL. (Isaiah 5:20-24 RNEB)
For, behold, YAH will come with fire, and his chariots shall be like the whirlwind; to render his anger with fierceness, and his rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire will YAH execute judgment, and by his sword, on all flesh; and the slain of YAH shall be many. (Isaiah 66:15-16 RNEB)

We are reading what’s going to take place when Yahshua returns to execute judgment on the face of the earth.

THOSE WHO SANCTIFY AND PURIFY THEMSELVES in order to enter the gardens, then follow the one who was already there, EATING PIG’S FLESH, REPTILES AND MICE, WILL ALL BE DESTROYED TOGETHER, says YAH. (Isaiah 66:17 RNEB)

YAH gave us laws, ordinances, and statutes to follow which sanctify us, but now Man is saying we don’t need to keep the law and adhere to his word, there going to cleanse and sanctify themselves based on what they believe is right. One of many examples of this is the civil Sabbath [Sunday], man set his own day of rest, which is a mark and a sign on all who adhere to it. A day created in direct opposition to YAH’s seventh day Sabbath, which is an eternal sign of our covenant with him. Today most of the earth acknowledges Sunday as their day of rest, but it’s evil and represents the pride and rebellion in mans heart.

For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, says YAH, so shall your seed and your name remain. IT SHALL HAPPEN, THAT FROM ONE NEW MOON TO ANOTHER, AND FROM ONE SABBATH TO ANOTHER, SHALL ALL FLESH COME TO WORSHIP BEFORE ME, SAYS YAH. (Isaiah 66:22-23 RNEB)

This is a prophecy about the ushering in of the theocratic system, where everyone will have the knowledge of YAH and know how to serve him. This is about free will, we all have a decision to make, whether we want to submit ourselves to YAH’s ordinances and serve him according to his dictates or do what man has determined is acceptable.

They shall go forth, and look on the dead bodies of the men who have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, NEITHER SHALL THEIR FIRE BE QUENCHED; and they shall be an abhorring to all flesh. (Isaiah 66:24 RNEB)
If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having your two hands to go into Gehinnom, INTO THE UNQUENCHABLE FIRE, ‘where their worm doesn’t die, and the fire is not quenched.’ (Mark 9:43-44 RNEB)

Yahshua was quoting this from Isaiah 66:24.

If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life lame, rather than having your two feet to be cast into Gehinnom, into the FIRE THAT WILL NEVER BE QUENCHED– ‘WHERE THEIR WORM DOESN’T DIE, and the fire is not quenched.’ If your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out. It is better for you to enter into the Kingdom of Elohim with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Gehinnom of fire, (Mark 9:45-47 RNEB)

Gey Hinnom, the Valley of Hinnom where the term Hell is derived is known for burning everything that was undesirable, which included the corpses of dead bodies as we have seen illustrated in Isaiah 66:24.

that you will take up this parable against the king of Babel, and say, “How the oppressor has ceased! The golden city has ceased!” (Isaiah 14:4 RNEB)
grave from beneath has moved for you to meet you at your coming. It stirs up the dead for you, even all the rulers of the earth. It has raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. (Isaiah 14:9 RNEB)
Your pride is brought down to the grave, with the sound of your stringed instruments. Maggots are spread out under you, AND WORMS COVER YOU. (Isaiah 14:11 RNEB)

Worms consume dead flesh.

You were the anointed Keruv who covers: and I set you, [so that] you were on the holy mountain of Elohim; you have walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until unrighteousness was found in you. By the abundance of your traffic they filled the midst of you with violence, and you have sinned: therefore I have cast you as profane out of the mountain of Elohim; and I have destroyed you, covering Keruv, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness: I have cast you to the ground; I have laid you before kings, that they may see you. By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your traffic, you have profaned your sanctuaries; THEREFORE HAVE I BROUGHT FORTH A FIRE FROM THE MIDST OF YOU; IT HAS DEVOURED YOU, AND I HAVE TURNED YOU TO ASHES ON THE EARTH in the sight of all those who see you. (Ezekiel 28:14-18 RNEB)

This scripture is talking about Satan, he will be destroyed and turned to ash. At this point he will cease to exist, this is not describing eternal torture.

Unquenchable fire is a fire that can’t be put out, the wicked will be burned until they turn to ash, nowhere do we see anything illustrating eternal life in a flame of fire. The scripture is very clear that only the righteous receive eternal life, not the wicked.

“For, behold, the day comes, it burns as a furnace; and all the proud, and all who work wickedness, will be stubble; and THE DAY THAT COMES WILL BURN THEM UP,” says YAH of Armies, “that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. (Malachi 4:1 RNEB)

Yahshua said in the book of Matthew that the chaff shall be burnt up, totally destroyed. All the prophets said the same thing and Yahshua is reiterating their message in the new testament.

But to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out, and leap like calves of the stall. YOU SHALL TREAD DOWN THE WICKED; FOR THEY WILL BE ASHES under the soles of your feet in the day that I make,” says YAH of Armies. (Malachi 4:2-3 RNEB)

The prophets through their descriptions are telling us a story about what will happen to the wicked and their understanding is very different from what we find being taught by most religious leaders today.

Lets see what David said on this matter.

But THE WICKED SHALL PERISH. The enemies of YAH shall be like the beauty of the fields. THEY WILL VANISH– VANISH LIKE SMOKE. (Psalms 37:20 RNEB)

They are completely consumed and destroyed by fire.

though the wicked spring up as the grass, and all the evil-doers flourish, THEY WILL BE DESTROYED FOREVER. (Psalms 92:7 RNEB)
The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever. They have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name. (Revelation 14:11 RNEB)

Many will use this verse to support an eternal hell because it’s translated “their torment goes up forever and ever,” but lets see what this means.

Behold, it comes, and it shall be done, says YAH Elohim; this is the day about which I have spoken. Those who dwell in the cities of Yisra’el shall go forth, and shall make fires of the weapons and burn them, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the war clubs, and the spears, and THEY SHALL MAKE FIRES OF THEM SEVEN YEARS; (Ezekiel 39:8-9 RNEB)

It will take seven years to totally consume these weapons of war by fire, that’s a long time. If these were people burning for seven years it would probably seem like an eternity, there is no way of knowing how long it will take to completely destroy the body, perhaps it’s the same seven years, seven is the number of completeness. The breath of life that gives life to the body would have left long before this was completed, the persons awareness would have already come to an end.

In the next verse Yochanan sees a vision of what will happen to the wicked and he’s seeing them being completely annihilated, there is no rest for them because they have been utterly destroyed, their essence is gone. Yochanan sees a vision, an illustration of what will happen to the wicked. These are the very same statements we see used with the cities of Sedom and Amorah, it says they burned forever. This is why we must be cautious to review the scriptures that talk about burning forever, there is no evidence of a fire today. Once something is completely destroyed it can’t burn anymore.

The rest of the dead didn’t live until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over these, THE SECOND DEATH has no power, but they will be priests of Elohim and of the Anointed, and will reign with him one thousand years. (Revelation 20:5-6 RNEB)

The first death is when we die in our mortal state, the second death occurs after the white throne judgment of the wicked. Remember in Ezekiel 28 it says, “I brought forth fire from within you, and it has devoured you; I reduced you into ashes on the ground in the sight of all who can see you.”

The devil who deceived them WAS THROWN INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE AND SULFUR, where the beast and the false prophet are also. They will be tormented day and night forever and ever. (Revelation 20:10 RNEB)

The prophet told us he would be consumed to ashes as is the case with all the wicked, so when we go into the book Revelation which is a vision, we know there is symbolism and several different methods used to give a clear understanding of what’s going to take place in the latter days. This is done to raise the level of urgency so people will turn to Elohim in truth and righteousness. To understand fully what is taking place in the new testament, we will need to start in the old testament.

I saw a great white throne, and him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. There was found no place for them. I SAW THE DEAD, THE GREAT AND THE SMALL, STANDING BEFORE THE THRONE, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS. (Revelation 20:11-12 RNEB)

This is a picture of judgment day, and the books opened are the law books. Elohim gave us the law because we will be judged by the law. We also see it will not be what’s in our heart that is judged, but the work of our hands, our actions and words. Wouldn’t a righteous Elohim provide one clear standard that all mankind will be judged by? The standard is his laws and ordinances which are in the first five books of the bible. Most Christians are falsely under the notion the law has been done away with, and subsequently follow a standard set by men.

The sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and grave gave up the dead who were in them. They were judged, each one according to his works. (Revelation 20:13 RNEB)

Death is a state of being, and the grave is a resting place.

Death and grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:14 RNEB)

Lets see what death is according to scripture.

Those living know they will die, remember we have those in the first resurrection, and the second death has no power over them, so to understand the second death we need to know what death is. It says here the dead don’t know anything, they have no more reward, and the memory of them is forgotten. If they don’t know anything how can they feel pain of joy?

Also their love, their hatred, and their envy has perished long ago; neither have they any more a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun. Go your way–eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for Elohim has already accepted your works. Let your garments be always white, and don’t let your head lack oil. Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your life of vanity, which he has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity: for that is your portion in life, and in your labor in which you labor under the sun. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; FOR THERE IS NO WORK, NOR DEVICE, NOR KNOWLEDGE, NOR WISDOM, IN THE GRAVE, WHERE YOU ARE GOING. (Ecclesiastes 9:6-10 RNEB)

Those in the grave represent the first death, there is no knowledge, wisdom, movement, pain, joy, enemies, friends or anything.

Once in the grave we don’t come up, this does away with the idea of ghosts being disembodied dead people.

so man lies down and doesn’t rise. Until the heavens are no more, they shall not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep. “Oh that you would hide me in the grave, that you would keep me secret, until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time, AND REMEMBER ME! If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my warfare would I wait, until my release should come. (Job 14:12-14 RNEB)
But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives. In the end, he will stand upon the earth. After my skin is destroyed, then in my flesh shall I see Elohim, (Job 19:25-26 RNEB)

We will be resurrected in a new body, this is the reason Yahshua said, “fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehinnom”. Job was aware there was a resurrection and asked YAH to remember him. He knew his current body would be destroyed, but he would be raised to see Elohim in a new body if he was remembered.

Whom I, even I, shall see on my side. My eyes shall see, and not as a stranger. “My heart is consumed within me. If you say, ‘How we will persecute him!’ because the root of the matter is found in me, be afraid of the sword, FOR WRATH BRINGS THE PUNISHMENTS OF THE SWORD, THAT YOU MAY KNOW THERE IS A JUDGMENT.” (Job 19:27-29 RNEB)
set apart among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more. THEY ARE CUT OFF FROM YOUR HAND. (Psalms 88:5 RNEB)

They are cut off from his hand because they will be totally annihilated. Consequently, we see what death is according to scripture and there are many more references that we could look at to help substantiate this, however we have covered enough scriptures that deal with the heart of this matter and clearly show what’s being said.

Death and grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:14 RNEB)

This is the second death, this is where the wicked will be totally consumed, burned up by fire. This is the judgment and fate of the wicked.

The purpose of this study was to present a clear understanding from a doctrinal perspective based on the scriptures of what will happen to the wicked. Our hope is to receive eternal life at the second coming and not be judged with eternal death, the complete and utter destruction of the body, never to be known or exist again.

We are being judged right now, this is how YAH determines those who will make it in the first resurrection without having to experience the great white throne judgment. If we’re raised in the second resurrection, which means specifically for white throne judgment, were just there to hear the verdict. As Ezekiel has said in prophecy, we have already secured our fate by our works, actions, and behavior.

Summing Up

For the past two thousand years Christianity has promoted a teaching of hell fire doctrine to show the judgment that’s going to take place on the wicked. This particular teaching came from Greek and Roman theology not the Hebraic culture or teaching. Sadly, Christians adopted Greco Roman teachings into Christianity and began to teach an opposing theology which goes against the intent and the word of Elohim. There is nothing in scripture which denotes the wicked will burn in hell forever, however you may find scripture that suggests this, man will be resurrected and burned, totally consumed until only ash is left. Man will not be in a state of awareness or any type of eternal torment if he is judged among the wicked. YAH never stated any punishment like this in the law or the prophets, therefore we have to look deeply into the new testament where it appears that this fate is being suggested, once we begin to look closely we will find that the Apostles and disciples actually spoke of Topheth, the valley of Gey Hinnom and equated it with the judgment of those who walk unrighteously. Just as King Yoash dug up the prophets and burned them in the valley which was prophetically a symbol of end time justice.
