Man & Woman, The Marriage Covenant II

The purpose of this study is to analyze the spiritual roles of man and woman, a man and his wife, and a wife and her husband, as it relates to the spiritual guidelines mandated by YAH. This will help us to look at ourselves through the laws and precepts of Elohim to see if we’re meeting his expectations and receiving the just rewards of peace and stability as he has promised to those who love him and keep his commandments. We will be answering the following questions.

  • What was Man created to do?
  • What position was Man given after he was created?
  • Why was the woman created?
  • How does a man equip himself to walk righteously and fulfill his role?
  • What are the roles and position of the man now?
  • What characteristics should be exemplified by man?
  • What should a righteous woman look for in a man?
  • What’s the woman’s part in the family?
  • What happens when either the man or the woman doesn’t fulfill their role?

Once we establish an understanding on this topic it’s our hope that you will take the time to do a self analysis to see if your meeting the expectations of Elohim and address any transgressions that exist.

One of our primary concerns should be the relationship between the man, the woman, and Elohim. This is a critical relationship given that it involves our social as well as theocratic development. The proper understanding of this union and the roles and responsibilities of the man and woman has been slowly deteriorating. Through an exhaustive study of scripture, we will clearly present the standard and expectations of YAH, Elohim.

In the first part of this study, we went over a number of things as they related to man, including his duties, roles, and responsibility as Elohim ordained. What we began to see is how mankind deviated from Elohim’s original plan by his own decision, and as a result he now rules the earth with a number of traits that are opposed to the original plan of Elohim. Man can exhibit any combination of the following physical and emotional traits.

  • Slothfulness -These are men that desire, but they have not, they want everyone else’s dainties but always fail to do what’s necessary to have their own.
  • Insecurities – This is self-doubt and takes the form of any, or all of the following: envy, greed, being weak in adversity, uncompromising, contentious, argumentative, cowardly, double minded, volatile, vulnerable and not dependable.
  • Feelings of Inadequacy – These individuals generally have an insatiable appetite for things, which they need to define themselves and explain who they are.

Our works are the only thing that truly defines who we are.

Elohim won’t accept an abomination as a sacrifice, nothing that’s unclean will be accepted. We have to make sure we’re consistently meeting the expectations set forth by YAH, Elohim.

DON’T BE CONFORMED TO THIS WORLD, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove (test) what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of Elohim. (Romans 12:2 RNWEB)

We should be attending an ecclesiastical institution every week to learn how to remove ourselves from the world. The only way we can stop thinking like the children of the Adversary is by renewing our minds with the word of Elohim, gaining a full understanding of his laws, precepts, and statutes, which are the only acceptable guidelines for walking in righteousness.

When Elohim created man he setup a corporate structure, every man, his wife, and children make up their own institution. Elohim wrote the governing policies, processes, and procedures that apply to each of these family units. His code of ethics touches the mind and emotions of every man and woman, and we need to be in agreement with him, he does not have to be in agreement with us. This has been mankind’s challenge since the very beginning, the only way we can be in agreement with him is by being obedient to his word.

People have issues today because they have been molded and formed by the worlds system. There are people who claim to be walking in the covenant who are volatile, vulnerable, suspicious, and often not dependable, they won’t make it into the kingdom.

Again the word of YAH came to me, saying, Son of man, cause Yerushalayim to know her abominations; and say, Thus says YAH Elohim to Yerushalayim: Your origin and your birth is of the land of the Kena`ani; the Amori was your father, and your mother was a Chittite. (Ezekiel 16:1-3 RNWEB)

Elohim is pointing out that Yisrael came out of pagan origins.

As for your birth, in the day you were born your navel was not cut, neither were you washed in water to cleanse you; you weren’t salted at all, nor swaddled at all. No eye pitied you, to do any of these things to you, to have compassion on you; but you were cast out in the open field, for that your person was abhorred, in the day that you were born. When I passed by you, and saw you weltering in your blood, I said to you, [Though you are] in your blood, live; yes, I said to you, [Though you are] in your blood, live. I caused you to multiply as that which grows in the field, and you increased and grew great, and you attained to excellent ornament; your breasts were fashioned, and your hair was grown; yet you were naked and bare. Now when I passed by you, and looked at you, behold, your time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over you, and covered your nakedness: yes, I SWORE TO YOU, AND ENTERED INTO A COVENANT WITH YOU, SAYS YAH ELOHIM, AND YOU BECAME MINE. (Ezekiel 16:4-8 RNWEB)

There will be many things revealed that will go directly against the way most men and women think, which is the problem we face. Everyone wants to decide for themselves what the right way is, however there is only one way that will lead to eternal life, and that’s by following ALL the laws, precepts, and ordinances of Elohim, he gave us rules and regulations to follow for all areas of life. We must give up what we believe and follow Elohim’s way of doing things.

Then washed I you with water; yes, I THOROUGHLY washed away your blood from you, and I anointed you with oil. I clothed you also with embroidered work, and shod you with sealskin, and I girded you about with fine linen, and covered you with silk. I decked you with ornaments, and I put bracelets on your hands, and a chain on your neck. I put a ring on your nose, and earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head. Thus were you decked with gold and silver; and your clothing was of fine linen, and silk, and embroidered work; you ate fine flour, and honey, and oil; and you were exceeding beautiful, and you did prosper to royal estate. (Ezekiel 16:9-13 RNWEB)

The males responsibility is to make sure everything is setup for his wife, this includes making sure she’s taken care of, cleansed, and is fully provided for. This is why the law allows a woman to leave if a man is not providing for her necessities. The male must uphold his position over the woman in marriage by following the laws and precepts of Elohim, not what he feels or decides on his own is right.

YAH made his bride beautiful, a compliment to his glory, just as man should do with his wife. Remember, the man is the glory of YAH, and woman is the glory of man.

Your renown went forth among the nations for your beauty; FOR IT WAS PERFECT, THROUGH MY MAJESTY which I had put on you, says YAH Elohim. (Ezekiel 16:14 RNWEB)

YAH is saying his wife was perfect because he afforded her all these opportunities that came through his labor. Remember YAH’s wife was Yisrael, but this is an example on how a husband should treat his wife, so no less is expected from us.

YAH Elohim said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18 RNWEB)

Elohim made women as a helper that would be fitting for man, one that would work with him and not against him.

YAH Elohim caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. He made the rib, which YAH Elohim had taken from the man, into a woman, and brought her to the man. The man said, “THIS IS NOW BONE OF MY BONES, AND FLESH OF MY FLESH. SHE WILL BE CALLED WOMAN, because she was taken out of Man.” (Genesis 2:21-23 RNWEB)

Notice Adam named the woman, he had the authority because he had dominion over the earth, just as he named all the animals.

Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and THEY WILL BE ONE FLESH. (Genesis 2:24 RNWEB)

They shall be of one mind.

Elohim created man in his own image. In Elohim’s image he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27 RNWEB)

Both man and woman were created in Elohim’s image, woman was created to be mans helper, or worker.

Help – To give assistance or support to; To be of use to; To serve; Aid.

But to the wicked Elohim says, “WHAT RIGHT DO YOU HAVE TO DECLARE MY STATUTES, that you have taken my covenant on your lips, SEEING YOU HATE INSTRUCTION, and throw my words behind you? When you saw a thief, you consented with him, and have participated with adulterers. “You give your mouth to evil. Your tongue frames deceit. You sit and speak against your brother. You slander your own mother’s son. (Psalms 50:16-20 RNWEB)

Elohim is speaking to the those who are unrighteous, and he’s challenging them on what right they have to declare his statutes, so they know Elohim’s law. These verses are specifically addressing apostates, who wanted to talk about the law, but not keep the law.

For a man indeed ought not to have his head covered, because he is the image and glory of Elohim, but the woman is the glory of the man. (1 Corinthians 11:7 RNWEB)

Man is the glory of Elohim, and woman is the glory of man. Man became renowned by reason of YAH’s splendor, and woman is renowned due to man’s splendor.

Listen, sons, to a father’s instruction. Pay attention and know understanding; for I give you sound learning. Don’t forsake my law. For I was a son to my father, tender and an only child in the sight of my mother. He taught me, and said to me: “LET YOUR HEART RETAIN MY WORDS. KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS, AND LIVE. Get wisdom. Get understanding. Don’t forget, neither swerve from the words of my mouth. DON’T FORSAKE HER, AND SHE WILL PRESERVE YOU. LOVE HER, AND SHE WILL KEEP YOU. (Proverbs 4:1-6 RNWEB)

YAH is using an analogy of a woman to get his point across, if we don’t forsake the law it will preserve us, if we love the law, it will keep us. The laws and commandments of Elohim must be made our counterpart, and something we truly love.

Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, GET UNDERSTANDING. (Proverbs 4:7 RNWEB)

We can’t just know the law, we must understand it.

Esteem her, and she will exalt you. She will bring you to honor, when you embrace her. (Proverbs 4:8 RNWEB)

If we exalt and embrace the law above all else she will bring us honor.

She will give to your head a garland of grace. She will deliver a crown of splendor to you.” LISTEN, MY SON, AND RECEIVE MY SAYINGS. THE YEARS OF YOUR LIFE WILL BE MANY. (Proverbs 4:9-10 RNWEB)

We can’t just hear the word, we must receive it, which means putting it into practice.

I have taught you in the way of wisdom. I have led you in straight paths. When you go, your steps will not be hampered. When you run, you will not stumble. Take firm hold of instruction. Don’t let her go. KEEP HER, FOR SHE IS YOUR LIFE. DON’T ENTER INTO THE PATH OF THE WICKED. DON’T WALK IN THE WAY OF EVIL MEN. Avoid it, and don’t pass by it. Turn from it, and pass on. (Proverbs 4:11-15 RNWEB)

We need to stay away from the ways of evil men. We must live and breath the law, we can’t just do what we feel is right, and we certainly can’t judge what’s right by the worlds standard.

For they don’t sleep, unless they do evil. Their sleep is taken away, unless they make someone fall. For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. But the path of the righteous is like the dawning light, that shines more and more until the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness. They don’t know what they stumble over. MY SON, ATTEND TO MY WORDS. TURN YOUR EAR TO MY SAYINGS. LET THEM NOT DEPART FROM YOUR EYES. KEEP THEM IN THE MIDST OF YOUR HEART. FOR THEY ARE LIFE TO THOSE WHO FIND THEM, AND HEALTH TO THEIR WHOLE BODY. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you. Let your eyes look straight ahead. Fix your gaze directly before you. Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established. Don’t turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil. (Proverbs 4:16-27 RNWEB)
For a man indeed ought not to have his head covered, because he is the image and glory of Elohim, but the woman is the glory of the man. (1 Corinthians 11:7 RNWEB)

The woman is the glory of man because the only reason she was created was to be a helper and compliment to him.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one keep warm alone? (Ecclesiastes 4:9-11 RNWEB)

Elohim created the woman to support and complement the man, each supporting each other so their way is straight and their labor righteous.

Don’t we all have one father? Hasn’t one Elohim created us? Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, profaning the covenant of our fathers? Judah has dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Yisra’el and in Yerushalayim; for Judah has profaned the holiness of YAH which he loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign elohim. YAH will cut off, to the man who does this, him who wakes and him who answers, out of the tents of Jacob, and him who offers an offering to YAH of Armies. This again you do: you cover the altar of YAH with tears, with weeping, and with sighing, because he doesn’t regard the offering any more, neither receives it with good will at your hand. Yet you say, ‘Why?’ Because YAH has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your companion, and the wife of your covenant. Did he not make one, although he had the residue of the Spirit? Why one? He sought a reverent seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. (Malachi 2:10-15 RNWEB)

This is referring to YAH’s covenant with Yisrael, however we can apply this to the union between a man and a woman, because Elohim gave us illustrations to complement and support this type of behavior.

FOR I HATE DIVORCE,” says YAH, the Elohim of Yisra’el, “and him who covers his garment with violence!” says YAH of Armies. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you don’t deal treacherously. You have wearied YAH with your words. Yet you say, ‘How have we wearied him?’ In that you say, ‘Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of YAH, and he delights in them;’ or ‘Where is the Elohim of justice?’ (Malachi 2:16-17 RNWEB)

Divorce is unacceptable to YAH, unless it’s for sexual perversion, or a woman not being taken care of by her husband. These exceptions exist because YAH hates these even more than divorce.

I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys. Lover As a lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters. Beloved As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banquet hall. His banner over me is love. Strengthen me with raisins, refresh me with apples; For I am faint with love. His left hand is under my head. His right hand embraces me. I ADJURE YOU, DAUGHTERS OF YERUSHALAYIM, BY THE ROES, OR BY THE HINDS OF THE FIELD, THAT YOU NOT STIR UP, NOR AWAKEN LOVE, UNTIL IT SO DESIRES. (Song of Solomon 2:1-7 RNWEB)

We should not try to provoke or instigate a marriage union before it’s the proper time, it needs to run through a natural course. A relationship that’s pushed into a covenant through pretense, someone’s advice, or from an act of desperation, do to loneliness or other reasons will generally not prosper. This can only lead to divorce, a relationship needs time to mature to know if it’s meant to be.

It happened when Yahshua had finished these words, he departed from the Galil, and came into the borders of Judah beyond the Yarden. Great multitudes followed him, and he healed them there. Pharisees came to him, testing him, and saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?” He answered, “Haven’t you read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall join to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh?’ (Matthew 19:1-5 RNWEB)

Yahshua is quoting Adam when he says ‘For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall join to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh?’. Adam wrote this precept not Elohim, he was able to make this declaration because he was given dominion over the earth.

SO THAT THEY ARE NO MORE TWO, BUT ONE FLESH. What therefore Elohim has joined together, don’t let man tear apart.” (Matthew 19:6 RNWEB)

In a proper union between husband and wife there should not be two different people making decisions, the man has the authority and the woman should be a compliment and helper in upholding that authority. Just as a man must come into agreement with Elohim’s word, the woman should be submissive and in agreement to her husband. This is not an opinion, this is law, a process ordained by Elohim from the beginning.

They asked him, “Why then did Moshe command us to give her a bill of divorce, and divorce her?” He said to them, “Moshe, because of the hardness of your hearts, allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been so. (Matthew 19:7-8 RNWEB)

Moshe wrote the precept of divorce not Elohim, and Yahshua is saying we need to restore the original precepts and ordinances governing the union of a man and a woman that date back to long before Moshe.

I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries her when she is divorced commits adultery.” (Matthew 19:9 RNWEB)

Sexual perversion is the only reason for a man to divorce his wife.

Or don’t you know that he who is joined to a prostitute is one body? For, “The two,” says he, “will become one flesh.” (1 Corinthians 6:16 RNWEB)
DON’T BE UNEQUALLY YOKED WITH UNBELIEVERS, for what fellowship has righteousness and lawlessness? Or what communion has light with darkness? What agreement has the Anointed with Beliya`al? Or WHAT PORTION HAS A BELIEVER WITH AN UNBELIEVER (an apostate)? (2 Corinthians 6:14-15 RNWEB)

Though not expressly forbidden in the law we should only marry someone else in the covenant, we should never entertain the foolish idea that we can convert someone, and we should never be in a relationship with a non believer that could lead to marriage. We can’t have intimate fellowship or relationships with people that are not walking in the covenant, any type of close relationship with a non believer can only lead to strife, discord, disagreement, and often much worse.

What agreement has a temple of Elohim with idols? For you are a temple of the living Elohim. Even as Elohim said, “I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their Elohim, and they will be my people.” Therefore, “‘COME OUT FROM AMONG THEM, AND BE SEPARATE,’ says YAH. ‘Touch no unclean thing. I will receive you. I will be to you a Father. You will be to me sons and daughters,’ says YAH Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:16-18 RNWEB)

If the man would do what he’s supposed to, and the women did what she was supposed to, it’s possible to have a perfect marriage.

But to the married I command–not I, but the Master–that the wife not leave her husband (but if she departs, let her remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband not leave his wife. But to the rest I–not the Master–say, if any brother has an unbelieving wife, and she is content to live with him, let him not leave her. (1 Corinthians 7:10-12 RNWEB)

Shaul wrote this to address the people that were entering the covenant through conversion, and their spouses were still walking in the ways of the world.

The woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he is content to live with her, let her not leave her husband. (1 Corinthians 7:13 RNWEB)

As long as the husband and wife are content to stay together without vexing the others cultural and religious rights and respects the others beliefs, they should not divorce. This only applies to this particular circumstance [one converted the other did not], someone that is in the covenant should never marry someone that’s not under these pretenses.

For the unbelieving husband is sanctified in the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified in the husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy. YET IF THE UNBELIEVER DEPARTS, LET THERE BE SEPARATION. The brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but ELOHIM HAS CALLED US IN PEACE. For how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife? (1 Corinthians 7:14-16 RNWEB)
When YAH your Elohim shall bring you into the land where you go to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before you, the Chittite, and the Girgashi, and the Amori, and the Kena`ani, and the Perizzi, and the Chivvi, and the Yevusi, seven nations greater and mightier than you; and when YAH your Elohim shall deliver them up before you, and you shall strike them; then you shall utterly destroy them: you shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them; neither shall you make marriages with them; your daughter you shall not give to his son, nor his daughter shall you take to your son. FOR HE WILL TURN AWAY YOUR SON FROM FOLLOWING ME, THAT THEY MAY SERVE OTHER ELOHIMS: so will the anger of YAH be kindled against you, and he will destroy you quickly. But thus shall you deal with them: you shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their engraved images with fire. (Deuteronomy 7:1-5 RNWEB)

This separation had to do with culture, the Hebrew culture is unique since it was predicated on the instructions of Elohim. If we receive into our midst someone of a different culture they will bring their thoughts and beliefs into the equation corrupting the pureness of the theology Elohim handed down, possibly causing us to stray. A union between two different beliefs can only bring strife into the household and cause even more problems when there are children.

Observe that which I command you this day. Behold, I drive out before you the Amori, the Kena`ani, the Chittite, the Perizzi, the Chivvi, and the Yevusi. Be careful, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, LEST IT BE FOR A SNARE IN THE MIDST OF YOU: but you shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and you shall cut down their Asherim; for you shall worship no other elohim: for YAH, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous Elohim. Don’t make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, lest they play the prostitute after their elohims, and sacrifice to their elohims, and one call you and you eat of his sacrifice; and you take of their daughters to your sons, and their daughters play the prostitute after their elohims, and make your sons play the prostitute after their elohims. You shall make no cast idols for yourselves. (Exodus 34:11-17 RNWEB)
Take good heed therefore to yourselves, that you love YAH your Elohim. Else if you do at all go back, and cleave to the remnant of these nations, even these who remain among you, and make marriages with them, and go in to them, and they to you; know for a certainty that YAH your Elohim will no more drive these nations from out of your sight; but they shall be a snare and a trap to you, and a scourge in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which YAH your Elohim has given you. Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing has failed of all the good things which YAH your Elohim spoke concerning you; all have happened to you, not one thing has failed of it. It shall happen, that as all the good things are come on you of which YAH your Elohim spoke to you, so will YAH bring on you all the evil things, until he has destroyed you from off this good land which YAH your Elohim has given you. When you disobey the covenant of YAH your Elohim, which he commanded you, and go and serve other elohims, and bow down yourselves to them; then will the anger of YAH be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land which he has given to you. (Joshua 23:11-16 RNWEB)
A wife is bound by law for as long as her husband lives; but if the husband is dead, she is free to be married to whoever she desires, only in the Master. (1 Corinthians 7:39 RNWEB)

The wife is bound by the law of her husband while he lives, it’s the man that makes the laws of his house, we have no example in scripture of the woman ever having authority. In the beginning it was Adam that named the animals and had dominion, his wife was his helper and compliment, completely under his authority. The authority was given to man by YAH, this is his law and his mandate. When the husband dies then the woman is free to marry someone else in the covenant.

Husbands, love your wives, even as the Anointed also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it; (Ephesians 5:25 RNWEB)

Husbands should love their wives and treat them with the same love, compassion and conviction that was demonstrated by the Anointed to us.

Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in YAH. Husbands, love your wives, and don’t be bitter against them. (Colossians 3:18-19 RNWEB)

Wives need to subject themselves to their husbands in accordance to the laws and precepts of YAH. This means in an ideal situation the woman is submitting herself to a man that is fully submitted to YAH.

In like manner, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word; seeing your pure behavior in fear. (1 Peter 3:1-2 RNWEB)

The woman should submit to her husband, even if he’s not in the covenant, so that maybe he will be persuaded by her behavior. We have an example of this working in scripture at the very beginning when Chavah, Adams wife persuaded him to eat the fruit. It’s also important for a righteous man not to be foolishly persuaded by an unrighteous woman.

Let your beauty be not just the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on fine clothing; but in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of Elohim very precious. For this is how the holy women before, who hoped in Elohim also adorned themselves, BEING IN SUBJECTION TO THEIR OWN HUSBANDS: AS SARAH OBEYED ABRAHAM, CALLING HIM MASTER, whose children you now are, if you do well, and are not put in fear by any terror. (1 Peter 3:3-6 RNWEB)

This is the example we’re told to follow in scripture, a woman calling the husband master is a term of endearment and respect for his position and authority.

You husbands, in like manner, LIVE WITH YOUR WIVES ACCORDING TO KNOWLEDGE, GIVING HONOR to the woman, as to the weaker vessel, as being also joint heirs of the grace of life; THAT YOUR PRAYERS MAY NOT BE HINDERED. (1 Peter 3:7 RNWEB)

The man is to give honor to his wife which means to have admiration, esteem, adoration, and respect. If the man or woman steps outside the process ordained by Elohim their prayers can be hindered.

Finally, be all like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, courteous, not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but instead blessing; knowing that to this were you called, that you may inherit a blessing. (1 Peter 3:8-9 RNWEB)
