Saved By Faith?

In this study we will provide a detailed understanding of what we must do to inherit eternal life and show that the simple act of faith alone can't free us from following the righteousness of the father by being obedient to his word. We will answer the following questions.

  • What is faith?
  • Is faith alone enough?
  • What is the true act of faith?
  • What is being obedient to the faith?
  • Did faith play a big part in the old testament?
  • What is righteousness?
  • How are we cleansed from sin?
  • Do we still have to follow the law?

The objective of this study is to show what scripture teaches about faith and the part it plays in walking in righteousness and receiving eternal life.

He said, I will hide my face from them. I will see what their end shall be; for they are a very perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness. (Deuteronomy 32:20 RNEB)

The children of Yisrael were not believing those things YAH had promised. As we transition into the New Testament you will see that faith will take on a different implication.

We need to have a clear understanding of faith because most religious leaders have taught for over 1800 years that the only thing necessary to receive eternal life is to believe.

Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright in him, but the righteous will live by his faith. (Habakkuk 2:4 RNEB)

We won't see faith being excessively documented in the old testament, it doesn't become predominant until we get to the New Testament and there is a specific reason for this. Therefore, we're going to proceed by uncovering the basic aspects of faith.

Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1 RNEB)But if Elohim so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won't he much more clothe you, you of little faith? (Matthew 6:30 RNEB)

We shouldn't worry if will have food, shelter, or money to pay our bills, we should focus on serving the creator, then the necessities of life will be provided.

"Therefore don't be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?', 'What will we drink?' or, 'With what will we be clothed?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first Elohim's Kingdom, AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS; and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:31-33 RNEB)

We must not only seek the kingdom of Elohim, but also do those things necessary to inherit the kingdom, we need to make sure we understand these things, we must seek the kingdom of Elohim and his righteousness first.

Lets look at what his righteousness is.

The next day, he saw Yahshua coming to him, and said, "Behold, THE LAMB OF ELOHIM, WHO TAKES AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD! (John 1:29 RNEB)

This is the preface to everything the Anointed came to do, as more details are revealed will begin to understand that this is the reason why faith became so rampant in the New Testament.

For Elohim so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For Elohim didn't send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him. He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn't believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of Elohim. (John 3:16-18 RNEB)

This verse is one of the reasons why so many say that all we have to do is believe in Yahshua [A.K.A. Jesus], and we will be saved, however this is only one of two things that are required.

The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14 RNEB)For the Torah was given through Moshe. Grace and truth came through Yahshua the Anointed. (John 1:17 RNEB)
The Samariai woman therefore said to him, "How is it that you, being a Hebrew, ask for a drink from me, a Samariai woman?" (For Hebrews have no dealings with Samariai.) (John 4:9 RNEB)
The word of Elohim increased and the number of the disciples multiplied in Yerushalayim exceedingly. A great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. (Acts 6:7 RNEB)

The faith was in knowing that Yahshua was the son of Elohim and that in order for us to receive eternal life, we must accept him as the final sacrifice, the atonement for our iniquity.

The word of Elohim increased and the number of the disciples multiplied in Yerushalayim exceedingly. A GREAT COMPANY OF THE PRIESTS WERE OBEDIENT TO THE FAITH. (Acts 6:7 RNEB)

The priests were of the Levitical order, under the old covenant in order for man to receive eternal life the mediator and the intercessor had to be the priest, he sacrificed and atoned for there sins. Now we see the priests leaving the estate that was given to them and coming into this new estate which is called the new covenant based on the blood of the Anointed, it says they were obedient to the faith.

Yosi, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas (which is, being interpreted, Son of Encouragement), a Levite, a man of Cyprus by race, (Acts 4:36 RNEB)

We should all be familiar with Barnabas, Shaul's companion on many journeys, we find out here he was a Levite.

having a field, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet. (Acts 4:37 RNWEB)

This was a Levite as we read in Acts 6:7 which says a great company of priests were obedient to the faith. This means they put down the Levitical covenant and took hold of the new covenant, so they renounced their position as priests and mediators and acknowledged and believed in Yahshua as the new High Priest, mediator, and sacrifice by being purified [baptized] in his name.

confirming the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that through many afflictions we must enter into the Kingdom of Elohim. (Acts 14:22 RNWEB)

Many people say that Elohim will protect his people, we don't have to go through any type of tribulation. They even go as far as associating tribulation with doing something bad, however the scripture says we will be persecuted for his name sake, and go through many afflictions [distress, pain, trouble, misery] before entering the Kingdom of Elohim. When this happens, we need to be strong and continue in the faith.

The apostles were bringing the message to Hebrews, a nation of people that at this time had been sacrificing animals for their sins for over 1500 years, and suddenly there being told that they no longer have to do this, but now they should be purified in the name of Yahshua the Anointed for the remission of sin, and they will receive eternal life. This would not be easy for any of them to accept, because all they knew was the ceremonial process of animal sacrifice, so the new process was accompanied by signs such as tongues and healing as proof, so the people would believe and have faith. The signs signified that this new process was being authorized and ordained by Elohim himself, just as he ordained the old order.

He came to Derbe and Lystra: and behold, a certain talmid was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess who believed; but his father was a Greek. The brothers who were at Lystra and Iconium gave a good testimony about him. Shaul wanted to have him go out with him, and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts; for they all knew that his father was a Greek. As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered the decrees to them to keep which had been ordained by the apostles and elders who were at Yerushalayim. So the assemblies were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily. (Acts 16:1-5 RNWEB)

People began to believe in this new doctrine, which is that Yahshua the Anointed is the son of Elohim, the one that had been prophesied to come from Genesis to Malachi, this man had come, and it is by his name and blood that we shall receive eternal life. We didn't see him feed the 5000, heal the sick, raise the dead or be crucified, so what do we have to do? Have Faith!

testifying both to Jews and to Greeks repentance toward Elohim, and faith toward our Master Yahshua. (Acts 20:21 RNWEB)

They were telling people to confess their sins, any transgressions of the law and ask for forgiveness. Therefore, when we are baptized in the name of Yahshua the Anointed it is for the remission of sins, as we entered into the covenant through his blood. The atonement sacrifice under the old covenant was also for the remission of sins. Yahshua came to replace the old process, and establish a new one.

and the righteousness of Elohim is through faith in Yahshua the Anointed to all and on all who believe. FOR THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE, (Romans 3:22 ISR)even the righteousness of Elohim through faith in Yahshua the Anointed to all and on all those who believe. FOR THERE IS NO DISTINCTION, (Romans 3:22 RNWEB)

There are many that think this is it, we believe in his blood and were saved, we have fulfilled the process, however scripture does not bear witness to this, there are two components to walking in righteousness, the first one is by keeping and the laws of Elohim, lets verify this in scripture.

YAH commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear YAH our Elohim, FOR OUR GOOD ALWAYS, that he might preserve us alive, as at this day. IT SHALL BE RIGHTEOUSNESS TO US, IF WE OBSERVE TO DO ALL THIS COMMANDMENT BEFORE YAH OUR ELOHIM, AS HE HAS COMMANDED US. (Deuteronomy 6:24-25 RNWEB)

This clearly says it is righteousness to us when we keep all his commands. We know YAH's word doesn't change so the people who believe that faith alone is enough, must be mistaken.

Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what manner of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. (Romans 3:27 RNWEB)

The Torah or law of works are animal sacrifice, and if we are still performing animal sacrifice the law of faith is void. This is because the faith in Yahshua as the propitiation of our sins replaced the laws of animal sacrifices.

We maintain therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. (Romans 3:28 RNWEB)

So, does this mean we don't need law? Lets see if this is righteous and spiritually correct.

yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through the faith of Yahshua the Anointed, even we believed in the Anointed Yahshua, that we might be justified by faith in the Anointed, and not by the works of the law, BECAUSE NO FLESH WILL BE JUSTIFIED BY THE WORKS OF THE LAW. (Galatians 2:16 RNEB)

This is because we are justified by faith, letts look at the first four commandments.

  1. You shall have no other Elohim before me.
  2. You shall not make to yourself any graven image.
  3. You shall not take the name of YAH in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

Many religious leaders are telling us is we can just forget these commandments and the others because we only need to have faith, however it seems obvious that Shaul is talking about another law that we cannot receive justification by.

Foolish Galatians, WHO HAS BEWITCHED YOU NOT TO OBEY THE TRUTH, before whose eyes Yahshua the Anointed was openly set forth among you as crucified? I just want to learn this from you. DID YOU RECEIVE THE SPIRIT BY THE WORKS OF THE LAW, OR BY HEARING OF FAITH? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now completed in the flesh? (Galatians 3:1-3 RNWEB)

Shaul came back to visit the assembly and found they were all participating in animal sacrifices for the covering of sins, this was occurring due to instability on the part of the assembly, they were not steadfast in the faith of Yahshua the Anointed for the forgiveness of there sins. They were vacillating between animal sacrifice, the old process and the sacrifice of Yahshua, the new process.

Did you suffer so many things in vain, if it is indeed in vain? He therefore who supplies the Spirit to you, and works miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith? (Galatians 3:4-5 RNWEB)

The one supplying the spirit [angel] is Elohim and the ones working the miracles were Shaul and Barnabas. They were doing these having received Yahshua as their propitiator by faith and not by the works of animal sacrifice.

Now that no man is justified by the Torah before Elohim is evident, for, "The righteous will live by faith." (Galatians 3:11 RNWEB)

We read this in the books of the law earlier.

The law is not of faith, but, "The man who does them will live by them." the Anointed redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree," (Galatians 3:12-13 RNWEB)

The Anointed became a curse for us because the law states cursed is every man that hangs on a tree. None of us can keep all the law, and scripture says cursed is the man that does not continue in all the law, so the Anointed became a curse for us, he took the curse upon himself, so we could be justified by his blood. The curse that it's talking about is death.

But the Scriptures imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Yahshua the Anointed might be given to those who believe. BUT BEFORE FAITH CAME, WE WERE KEPT IN CUSTODY UNDER THE LAW, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed. So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to the Anointed, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all children of Elohim, through faith in the Anointed Yahshua. (Galatians 3:22-26 RNWEB)

When this says before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, do you think it means we were kept under the commandments to obey Elohim? That wouldn't make any sense, we can find the answer in Gal 3:19.

What then is the law? IT WAS ADDED BECAUSE OF TRANSGRESSIONS, UNTIL THE SEED SHOULD COME TO WHOM THE PROMISE HAS BEEN MADE. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator. (Galatians 3:19 RNWEB)

We can see that the law or Torah being talked about here was added because of sin, until the seed which was Yahshua came. Therefore, it's only talking about the sacrificial laws, those having to do with animal sacrifices.

But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed. (Galatians 3:23 RNWEB)

Elohim gave the commandments to Moshe, he gave the commandments to the people, and the people said all that you have asked us, we will do. So Moshe sprinkled the book of the covenant, also known as the book of the law, and the people with blood sealing the covenant. Then afterwards the sacrificial laws were added to redeem them when they transgressed against what was written in the covenant. The grace that was given to them was the means to atone for their transgressions through animal sacrifice.

So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to the Anointed, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. (Galatians 3:24-25 RNEB)

We have a law that served a specific purpose until the Anointed should come, so that we might be righteous by having faith in him, and now that he has come the prior law concerning the atonement of sin is no longer applicable. The sacrificial laws served as a school master or tutor to prepare us for the Anointed.

For you are all children of Elohim, through faith in the Anointed Yahshua. For as many of you as were purified into the Anointed have put on the Anointed. (Galatians 3:26-27 RNEB)

The nations are immersed in paganism, when we are immersed in the Anointed we are first cleansed by the word of Elohim, that's why the great commission is to teach than baptize or immerse in water for the remission of sin.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in the Anointed Yahshua. (Galatians 3:28 RNEB)

We are all one if:

  1. We are baptized [purified] in his holy name.
  2. We have been cleansed by the word.
If you are the Anointed's, then you are Abraham's seed and heirs according to promise. (Galatians 3:29 RNEB)If the Anointed has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, and your faith also is in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:14 RNWEB)

If the Anointed was never resurrected the message was useless, it means nothing.

Yes, we are found false witnesses of Elohim, because we testified about Elohim that he raised up the Anointed, whom he didn't raise up, if it is so that the dead are not raised. For if the dead aren't raised, neither has the Anointed been raised. If the Anointed has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins. (1 Corinthians 15:15-17 RNWEB)

We are still in your sins because the animal sacrificial ordinances were put down to take on the new covenant or process for atonement, which is the belief in Yahshua the Anointed for the propitiation for our iniquity. Consequently, if the Anointed has not come we would still be in our sins, which further validates it was the sacrificial laws Shaul was talking about.

Then they also who are fallen asleep in the Anointed have perished. (1 Corinthians 15:18 RNWEB)

This would only occur if they put down the sacrificial ordinances, the deeds of the law, which was to give them a promise of eternal life and Yahshua was not who he claimed to be. This was something that they sought, they saw the animals being sacrificed, they saw the priests mediating over the covenant, and now they have to have faith in this man Yahshua that someone told them about that most likely heard it from someone else, who allegedly did all the good works reported of him. Shaul is saying if the Anointed has not come, then everyone that was baptized in his name would be damned when they are awakened at the resurrection. Everything was centered on the sacrifice, whether it was accepted by YAH or not, and that's why it took faith to become part of the New Covenant.

Therefore Yahshua did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written, that you may believe that Yahshua is the the Anointed, the Son of Elohim, and that believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:30-31 RNWEB)

The reason for the many signs during this time was to show that the new covenant process that was replacing the old sacrificial system was ordained by Elohim, this was the proof that was needed to convince the Hebrews to stop sacrificing animals. The ones who did not see the signs had to receive Yahshua by faith, believing in what they heard rather than what they could see. Lets look at an example where Moshe had been given a sign to convince the people he was sent by Elohim.

Moshe answered, "But, behold, they will not believe me, nor listen to my voice; for they will say, 'YAH has not appeared to you.'" YAH said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A rod." He said, "Throw it on the ground." He threw it on the ground, and it became a snake; and Moshe ran away from it. YAH said to Moshe, "Put forth your hand, and take it by the tail." He put forth his hand, and laid hold of it, and it became a rod in his hand. "That they may believe that YAH, the Elohim of their fathers, the Elohim of Abraham, the Elohim of Isaac, and the Elohim of Jacob, has appeared to you." YAH said furthermore to him, "Now put your hand inside your cloak." He put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, as white as snow. He said, "Put your hand inside your cloak again." He put his hand inside his cloak again, and when he took it out of his cloak, behold, it had turned again as his other flesh. "It will happen, if they will neither believe you nor listen to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign. It will happen, if they will not believe even these two signs, neither listen to your voice, that you shall take of the water of the river, and pour it on the dry land. The water which you take out of the river will become blood on the dry land." (Exodus 4:1-9 RNWEB)

These signs were given to get people to believe, the very same thing that occurred in the New Testament.

They, when they heard it, glorified Elohim. They said to him, "You see, brother, HOW MANY THOUSANDS THERE ARE AMONG THE HEBREWS OF THOSE WHO HAVE BELIEVED, AND THEY ARE ALL ZEALOUS FOR THE TORAH. (Acts 21:20 RNWEB)

This is a new covenant assembly, they believed in Yahshua, were baptized in his name, and they were also zealous for the law.

The day following, Shaul went in with us to Jacob; and all the elders were present. When he had greeted them, he reported one by one the things which Elohim had worked among the Gentiles through his ministry. (Acts 21:18-19 RNWEB)

All the Apostles and elders were at this meeting because they had a concern with Shaul, just as we read in Shaul's epistles, it suggested that we no longer needed to keep Elohim's laws. The apostles and elders had a problem with this because no one can show they serve Elohim if they don't keep the law, it's the standard that we are judged by.

They, when they heard it, glorified Elohim. They said to him, "You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Hebrews of those who have believed, AND THEY ARE ALL ZEALOUS FOR THE TORAH [LAW]. THEY HAVE BEEN INFORMED ABOUT YOU, THAT YOU TEACH ALL THE JEWS WHO ARE AMONG THE GENTILES TO FORSAKE MOSHE, TELLING THEM NOT TO CIRCUMCISE THEIR CHILDREN NEITHER TO WALK AFTER THE CUSTOMS. What then? The assembly must certainly meet, for they will hear that you have come. (Acts 21:20-22 RNWEB)Therefore do what we tell you. We have four men who have taken a vow. Take them, and purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses for them, that they may shave their heads. THEN ALL WILL KNOW THAT THERE IS NO TRUTH IN THE THINGS THAT THEY HAVE BEEN INFORMED ABOUT YOU, BUT THAT YOU YOURSELF ALSO WALK KEEPING THE TORAH [LAW]. (Acts 21:23-24 RNWEB)

Why would the elders require this if the whole law had been done away with? The answer is simple it was only the sacrificial law that was nullified and fulfilled by Yahshua the Anointed, the holiness and morality laws were never changed and are still being enforced today. How could we demonstrate our love if we don't observe his laws and commandments?

But concerning the Gentiles who believe, we have written our decision that they should observe no such thing, except that they should keep themselves from food offered to idols, from blood, from strangled things, and from sexual immorality." Then Shaul took the men, and the next day, purified himself and went with them into the temple, declaring the fulfillment of the days of purification, until the offering was offered for every one of them. (Acts 21:25-26 RNWEB)
Here is the patience of the holy ones, THOSE WHO KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS OF ELOHIM, AND THE FAITH OF YAHSHUA." (Revelation 14:12 RNWEB)

The true believer and follower not only is purified in the name of Yahshua, but also keeps all Elohim's commands.

The dragon grew angry with the woman, and went away to make war with the rest of her seed, WHO KEEP ELOHIM'S COMMANDMENTS AND HOLD YAHSHUA'S TESTIMONY. (Revelation 12:17 RNWEB)

Look who the dragon recognized as the remnant of YAH's seed, the ones keeping the commandments [laws], and have the testimony of Yahshua the Anointed, which means they entered the covenant by being purified in his name.

But they, passing on from Perga, came to Antioch of Pisidia. They went into the synagogue on the day of Sabbath, and sat down. After the reading of the Torah and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, "Brothers, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, speak." Sha'ul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, "Men of Yisra'el, and you who fear Elohim, listen. The Elohim of this people chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they stayed as aliens in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm, he led them out of it. For a period of about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness. When he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Kena`an, he gave them their land for an inheritance, for about four hundred fifty years. After these things he gave them judges until Shemu'el the prophet. Afterward they asked for a king, and Elohim gave to them Sha'ul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Binyamin, for forty years. When he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, to whom he also testified, 'I have found David the son of Yishai, a man after my heart, who will do all my will.' From this man's seed, Elohim has brought salvation to Yisra'el according to his promise, (Acts 13:14-23 RNEB)

Shaul is speaking in an Old Covenant assembly, we know this because he is explaining to the congregation who Yahshua is.

that Elohim has fulfilled the same to us, their children, in that he raised up Yahshua. As it is also written in the second psalm, 'You are my Son. Today I have become your father.' "Concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he has spoken thus: 'I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.' Therefore he says also in another psalm, 'You will not allow your Holy One to see decay.' For David, after he had in his own generation served the counsel of Elohim, fell asleep, and was laid with his fathers, and saw decay. But he whom Elohim raised up saw no decay. Be it known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man is proclaimed to you remission of sins, (Acts 13:33-38 RNWEB)

If this was a New Covenant assembly they would already be established in the faith, and wouldn't need to be convinced who Yahshua was.

and by him everyone who believes is justified from all things, from which you could not be justified by the Torah of Moshe. Beware therefore, lest that come on you which is spoken in the prophets: (Acts 13:39-40 RNWEB)
I tell the truth in the Anointed. I am not lying, my conscience testifying with me in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and unceasing pain in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed from the Anointed for my brothers' sake, my relatives according to the flesh, who are Yisra'eli's; whose is the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service, and the promises; of whom are the fathers, and from whom is the Anointed as concerning the flesh, who is over all, Elohim, blessed forever. Amein. (Romans 9:1-5 RNWEB)

He's simply saying it is a hard task to get people who were sacrificing animals all their lives to turn to the New Covenant, and he had a very heavy heart for his people because many would not receive his witness. The requirement was to receive Yahshua the Anointed by faith, and then we would have the ability to receive salvation, however the Hebrew found it easier to continue to have faith in animal sacrifices, because they were tangible and familiar.

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" Peter said to them, "Repent, and be purified, every one of you, in the name of Yahshua the Anointed for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all who are far off, even as many as YAH our Elohim will call to himself." (Acts 2:37-39 RNWEB)

These people received the word, and in this instance it was supported by the sign of languages, the Apostles spoke in the tongues of the people from all over the land who came to Yerushalayim for the festival of Pentecost.

Then those who gladly received his word were purified. There were added that day about three thousand souls. (Acts 2:41 RNWEB)

Three thousand were purified in the name of Yahshua the Anointed in one day, Wow!

They continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer. (Acts 2:42 RNWEB)
