The Kingdom of Heaven Suffers Violence

The purpose of this study is to examine what the meaning is behind the scripture found in Matthew 11:13 “the Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and violent men are trying to take it by force”.

Most certainly I tell you, among those who are born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than Yochanan the immerser; yet he who is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he. FROM THE DAYS OF YOCHANAN THE IMMERSER UNTIL NOW, THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN SUFFERS VIOLENCE, AND VIOLENT MEN ARE TRYING TO TAKE IT BY FORCE. For all the Prophets and the Torah prophesied until Yochanan. (Matthew 11:11-13 RNEB)

The objective of the New Testament is to spread the message of the coming kingdom and how to enter it. This verse is the initial verse which opens the door to several messages pertaining to the kingdom.

  1. The Message of the Kingdom
  2. The Power of the Kingdom
  3. The Evangel of the Kingdom
  4. The Glory of the Kingdom

The first step required to enter the kingdom is to receive the message of the kingdom which was brought first by Yochanan then Yahshua and finally the disciples. The harbinger and leader of the Kingdom evangel was Yochanan.

Lets look at the prophecy.

The voice of one who calls out, “Prepare the way of YAH in the wilderness! Make a level highway in the desert for our Elohim. (Isaiah 40:3 RNEB)
Behold, I will send you Eliyahu the prophet before the great and terrible day of YAH comes. HE WILL TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS TO THE CHILDREN, AND THE HEARTS OF THE CHILDREN TO THEIR FATHERS, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.” (Malachi 4:5-6 RNEB)

Now lets look at the New Testament documentation of the fulfillment of the prophecy.

But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zekharyah, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elisheva, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Yochanan. You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of YAH, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. HE WILL TURN MANY OF THE CHILDREN OF YISRA’EL TO YAH, their Elohim. He will go before him in the spirit and power of Eliyahu, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for YAH.” (Luke 1:13-17 RNEB)

Yochanan was born to usher in the kingdom message and to lay the foundation for Yahshua.

In those days, Yochanan the immerser came, preaching in the wilderness of Judah, saying, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!” FOR THIS IS HE WHO WAS SPOKEN OF BY ISAIAH THE PROPHET, SAYING, “THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, MAKE READY THE WAY OF YAH. MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.” (Matthew 3:1-3 RNEB)

Yochanan’s message is to repent for the power of the kingdom is at hand. However, his message was by and large interrupted and challenged by the Pharisees and Sadducees, and he was later killed by Herod. The Kingdom of heaven suffering violence is an exaggeration to illustrate that the kingdom message was not going to be spread without interference from the sons of Helel. Therefore, we see this statement fulfilled when Yochanan was beheaded, Yahshua was executed, and the executions that followed as the disciples spread the gospel of the kingdom under the threat of violence and many were killed by violent ones.

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you. Yes, and you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the nations. (Matthew 10:16-18 RNEB)
But the Master said to him, “Go your way, for he is my chosen vessel to bear my name before the nations and kings, and the children of Yisra’el. For I will show him how many things he must suffer for my name’s sake.” (Acts 9:15-16 RNEB)
They therefore who were scattered abroad by the oppression that arose about Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Hebrews only. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching Master Yahshua. (Acts 11:19-20 RNEB)
Now about that time, Herod the king stretched out his hands to oppress some of the assembly. He killed Jacob, the brother of Yochanan, with the sword. When he saw that it pleased the Hebrews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This was during the days of unleavened bread. When he had arrested him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of four soldiers each to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover. (Acts 12:1-4 RNEB)

The message of the Kingdom was not spread without violence and death from those who are violent and oppose the message.

From the time of Yochanan the Immerser until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been suffering violence; yes, violent ones are trying to snatch it away. (Matthew 11:12 CJB)
