The Malachem I

This will be an introduction to a series of studies that will exhaustively cover the subject of Angels or Messengers, which in Hebrew are known as the Malachem. We will be answering the following questions.

  • What is the purpose and function of the Malachem?
  • What titles are used for them?
  • How do they affect our lives?
  • What are there rolls?
  • What are there ranks?
  • What are their responsibilities?

Malak is Strong’s reference #4397 an defined as an unused root meaning to despatch as a deputy; a messenger; specifically of Elohim, that is, an angel (also a prophet, priest or teacher): - ambassador, angel, king, messenger. The term often denotes one sent on business or diplomacy by another.

The objective of this study is to introduce the divine order and lay the groundwork to help broaden your understanding and develop a clear depiction of how the divine order interacts in the affairs of men. Pay close attention to the verses and phrases that are presented, they will be tied together by the end of our introduction.

Praise YAH! Praise YAH from the heavens! Praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels! Praise him, all his hosts! Praise him, sun and moon! Praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you heavens of heavens, You waters that are above the heavens. Let them praise the name of YAH, For he commanded, and they were created. He has also established them forever and ever. He has made a decree which will not pass away. (Psa 148:1-6 RNWEB)

"He has Commanded and they were created." He commanded and the sun was created, He commanded and the moon was created, He commanded and the heavens were created, and He command and all things that exist were created. YAH gave the command and the Malachem hearkened to his word.

so shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth: it shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing I sent it to do. (Isa 55:11 RNWEB)

YAH speaks a word, it comes out of his mouth and it accomplishes all that he has spoken. Remember the word for Malak means to dispatch (send off to a destination or for a purpose), it’s a messenger or representative. YAH is issuing commands to the Malachem.

By YAH’s word, the heavens were made; all their army by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap. He lays up the deeps in storehouses. Let all the earth fear YAH. Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spoke, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood firm. (Psa 33:6-9 RNWEB)
For they choose to have this hidden from them: that the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by the Word of Elohim, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. (2Pe 3:5-6 ISR)

This scripture is referencing the Earth, and were being told the ground we walk on rose out of the water.

In the beginning Elohim created the heavens and the earth. And the earth came to be formless and empty, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of Elohim was moving on the face of the waters. (Gen 1:1-2 RNWEB)

The heavens are the ones directly above the earth, not where YAH resides. This can be verified in Gen 1:20 where it says the "birds fly above the earth on the face of the expanse of the heavens."

The Spirit (Ruach) of Elohim was hovering on the face of the waters. The most high gave a commandment and things began to be created, so lets see what the spirit was doing hovering over the waters.

Elohim said, "Let there be light," and there was light. Elohim saw the light, and saw that it was good. Elohim divided the light from the darkness. Elohim called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. There was evening and there was morning, one day. Elohim said, "Let there be an expanse in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters." Elohim made the expanse, and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. Elohim called the expanse sky. There was evening and there was morning, a second day. (Gen 1:3-8 RNWEB)

The Spirit of Elohim that was hovering over the waters was creating by the command of Elohim. What were seeing in Genesis chapter one is the creation of the heavens (sky) and the earth with all its components such as the expanse, ground, and water.

Bless YAH, my soul. YAH, my Elohim, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty. He covers himself with light as with a garment. He stretches out the heavens like a curtain. He lays the beams of his chambers in the waters. He makes the clouds his chariot. He walks on the wings of the wind. He makes his messengers spirits; his servants flames of fire. He laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be moved forever. (Psa 104:1-5 RNWEB)

Pay close attention! He makes his messengers Spirits, therefore the "Spirit of Elohim" which we mentioned in all the previous scriptures are the Malachem (agents, messengers, deputies) following the commands of YAH. So if a Malachem represents YAH, or "the Lord" he would be called the Spirit of the Lord. If the Spirit comes from Elohim he is called the Spirit of Elohim. Now take a moment and think about this, we could say the Malachem of Elohim or Malachem of the Lord without changing the meaning, since the Malachem or Angels were made the Spirits.

YAH has established his throne in the heavens. His kingdom rules over all. Praise YAH, you angels of his, who are mighty in strength, who fulfill his word, obeying the voice of his word. Praise YAH, all you armies of his, you servants of his, who do his pleasure. Praise YAH, all you works of his, in all places of his dominion. Praise YAH, my soul! (Psa 103:19-22 RNWEB)

The Malachem do His word! They fulfill his word, obeying the voice of his word. They are servants who do his pleasure, remember the scripture says his word does not return to him void but accomplishes all that he pleases. His word is accomplished by the Malachem.

YAH Knows All

"For his eyes are on the ways of a man. He sees all his goings. (Job 34:21 RNWEB)

For every step we make the most high has an accounting, every place we go he is there. He is watching all things, lets see how he does this.

For my eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from my face, neither is their lawlessness concealed from my eyes. (Jer 16:17 RNWEB)
YAH’s eyes are everywhere, keeping watch on the evil and the good. (Pro 15:3 RNWEB)

The eyes of the Most High are watching the good and the evil.

For the eyes of YAH run back and forth throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong on the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein you have done foolishly; for from henceforth you shall have wars. (2Ch 16:9 RNWEB)
great in counsel, and mighty in work; whose eyes are open on all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings: (Jer 32:19 RNWEB)

If YAH spots you doing good there is a reward, however if he catches you doing evil he judges accordingly.

YAH’s eyes are toward the righteous. His ears listen to their cry. YAH’s face is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry, and YAH hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. YAH is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but YAH delivers him out of them all. He protects all of his bones. Not one of them is broken. (Psa 34:15-20 RNWEB)

Many will be the afflictions of the righteous, which means we will not have a life without distress or trials, however YAH will deliver us from them all! To be among the righteous we must keep the laws and precepts of the Most High and be purified in the name of Yahshua the anointed.

I sought YAH, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked to him, and were radiant. Their faces shall never be covered with shame. This poor man cried, and YAH heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of YAH encamps round about those who fear him, and delivers them. (Psa 34:4-7 RNWEB)

YAH hears all those who walk in righteousness. He delivers them out of their troubles, this is accomplished by the Malachem who encamp around those who fear him.

Hear now, Yahoshua the Priest Gadol, you and your fellows who sit before you; for they are men who are a sign: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant, the Branch (Yahshua). For, behold, the stone that I have set before Yahoshua; on one stone are seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the engraving of it,’ says YAH of Armies, ’and I will remove the lawlessness of that land in one day. In that day,’ says YAH of Armies, ’you will invite every man his neighbor under the vine and under the fig tree.’" (Zec 3:8-10 RNWEB)

The angel who talked with me came again, and wakened me, as a man who is wakened out of his sleep. He said to me, "What do you see?" I said, "I have seen, and behold, a menorah all of gold, with its bowl on the top of it, and its seven lamps thereon; there are seven pipes to each of the lamps, which are on the top of it; and two olive trees by it, one on the right side of the bowl, and the other on the left side of it." I answered and spoke to the angel who talked with me, saying, "What are these, my master?" Then the angel who talked with me answered me, "Don’t you know what these are?" I said, "No, my master." Then he answered and spoke to me, saying, "This is the word of YAH to Zerubbavel, saying, ’Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says YAH of Armies. Who are you, great mountain? Before Zerubbavel you are a plain; and he will bring out the capstone with shouts of ’Grace, grace, to it!’" Moreover the word of YAH came to me, saying, "The hands of Zerubbavel have laid the foundation of this house. His hands shall also finish it; and you will know that YAH of Armies has sent me to you. Indeed, who despises the day of small things? For these seven shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbavel. These are the eyes of YAH, which run back and forth through the whole earth." (Zec 4:1-10 RNWEB)
Then I asked him, "What are these two olive trees on the right side of the menorah and on the left side of it?" I asked him the second time, "What are these two olive branches, which are beside the two golden spouts, that pour the golden oil out of themselves?" He answered me, "Don’t you know what these are?" I said, "No, my master." Then he said, "These are the two anointed ones who stand by YAH of the whole earth." (Zec 4:11-14 RNWEB)

Yahshua received seven eyes in Zec 3:9 and the Spirit of Elohim tells us in Zec 4:10 that the seven are the eyes that diligently search throughout the earth. Let’s see who they are.

Yochanan, to the seven assemblies that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from Elohim, who is and who was and who is to come; and from the seven Spirits who are before his throne; and from Yahshua the Anointed, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us, and washed us from our sins by his blood; (Rev 1:4-5 RNWEB)

There are seven Malachem standing before YAH’s thrown, they are there waiting for instructions. It’s interesting that the menorah is composed of seven candle sticks which had to be lit at all times in the temple.

We can also see here there are three entities that need to say something, YAH, the Seven Spirits (Malachem) and Yahshua the anointed. Let’s look at the order of communication between them.

This is the Revelation of Yahshua the Anointed, which Elohim gave him to show to his servants the things which must happen soon, which he sent and made known by his angel to his servant, Yochanan, who testified to Elohim’s word, and of the testimony of Yahshua the Anointed, about everything that he saw. Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things that are written in it, for the time is at hand. Yochanan, to the seven assemblies that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from Elohim, who is and who was and who is to come; and from the seven Spirits who are before his throne; (Rev 1:1-4 RNWEB)

We can see that the Most High told Yahshua who dispatched the Malachem to tell man. The process of sending a Malachem is a normal event. As we continued we seen there are seven that stand before the throne. These would be high ranking and powerful Malachem to be the only seven Spirits able to stand in the presence of YAH.

One of the elders said to me, "Don’t weep. Behold, the Lion who is of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome; he who opens the book and its seven seals." I saw in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, having seven horns, and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of Elohim, sent out into all the earth. (Rev 5:5-6 RNWEB)

We now know that the eyes of YAH are the seven spirits that stand in the throne room, and that these seven Malachem are sent out into all the earth.

Zekharyah said to the angel, "How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years." The angel answered him, "I am Gavri’el, who stands in the presence of Elohim. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. (Luk 1:18-19 RNWEB)

Gavri’el is one of the seven Malachem that is permitted to stand before the throne. Let’s look in the book of Daniel for more information.

Nevukhadnetzar the king, to all the peoples, nations, and languages, who dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you. It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High Elohim has worked toward me. How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation. I, Nevukhadnetzar , was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace. I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babel before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. Then came in the magicians, the enchanters, the Kasdim, and the soothsayers; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known to me the interpretation of it. But at the last Daniyel came in before me, whose name was Belteshatzar, according to the name of my elohim, and in whom is the spirit of the holy elohims: and I told the dream before him, [saying], Belteshatzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy elohims is in you, and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation of it. Thus were the visions of my head on my bed: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth; and the height of it was great. The tree grew, and was strong, and the height of it reached to the sky, and the sight of it to the end of all the earth. The leaves of it were beautiful, and the fruit of it much, and in it was food for all: the animals of the field had shadow under it, and the birds of the sky lived in the branches of it, and all flesh was fed from it. I saw in the visions of my head on my bed, and behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from the sky. He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit: let the animals get away from under it, and the fowls from its branches. Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of the sky: and let his portion be with the animals in the grass of the earth: let his heart be changed from man’s, and let an animal’s heart be given to him; and let seven times pass over him. The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Elyon rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whoever he will, and sets up over it the lowest of men. This dream I, king Nevukhadnetzar , have seen; and you, Belteshatzar, declare the interpretation, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able; for the spirit of the holy elohims is in you. Then Daniyel, whose name was Belteshatzar, was stricken mute for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered, Belteshatzar, don’t let the dream, or the interpretation, trouble you. Belteshatzar answered, My master, the dream be to those who hate you, and the interpretation of it to your adversaries. The tree that you saw, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached to the sky, and the sight of it to all the earth; whose leaves were beautiful, and the fruit of it much, and in it was food for all; under which the animals of the field lived, and on whose branches the birds of the sky had their habitation: it is you, O king, that are grown and become strong; for your greatness is grown, and reaches to the sky, and your dominion to the end of the earth. Whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from the sky, and saying, Hew down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of the roots of it in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of the sky: and let his portion be with the animals of the field, until seven times pass over him; this is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Elyon, which is come on my master the king: (Dan 4:1-24 RNWEB)

Daniyel’s interpreting Nevukhadnetzar dream, however is he interpreting the dream on his own or by the spirit of Elohim? We also have several references to watchers or malachem which were called holy ones, and knowing that they are also called spirits, it would be correct to call them "Holy Spirits" as well.

They both dreamed a dream, each man his dream, in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison. Yosef came in to them in the morning, and saw them, and saw that they were sad. He asked Par’oh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, saying, "Why do you look so sad today?" They said to him, "We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it." Yosef said to them, "Don’t interpretations belong to Elohim? Please tell it to me." (Gen 40:5-8 RNWEB)

The interpretations of dreams belongs to Elohim and no other, so to have an accurate interpretation of a dream it must be by a spirit of Elohim, which we now know are the Malachem.

The chief cupbearer told his dream to Yosef, and said to him, "In my dream, behold, a vine was in front of me, and in the vine were three branches. It was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and the clusters of it brought forth ripe grapes. Par’oh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Par’oh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Par’oh’s hand." Yosef said to him, "This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days. Within three more days, Par’oh will lift up your head, and restore you to your office. You will give Par’oh’s cup into his hand, the way you did when you were his cupbearer. But remember me when it will be well with you, and show kindness, please, to me, and make mention of me to Par’oh, and bring me out of this house. For indeed, I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon." When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Yosef, "I also was in my dream, and behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head. In the uppermost basket there was all kinds of baked food for Par’oh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head." Yosef answered, "This is the interpretation of it. The three baskets are three days. Within three more days, Par’oh will lift up your head from off you, and will hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from off you." It happened the third day, which was Par’oh’s birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants, and he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants. He restored the chief cupbearer to his position again, and he gave the cup into Par’oh’s hand; but he hanged the chief baker, as Yosef had interpreted to them. Yet the chief cupbearer didn’t remember Yosef, but forgot him. (Gen 40:9-23 RNWEB)
It happened in the morning that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all of Egypt’s magicians and wise men. Par’oh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Par’oh. (Gen 41:8 RNWEB)
Then Par’oh sent and called Yosef, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon. He shaved himself, changed his clothing, and came in to Par’oh. Par’oh said to Yosef, "I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it." Yosef answered Par’oh, saying, "It isn’t in me. Elohim will give Par’oh an answer of peace." (Gen 41:14-16 RNWEB)

It’s Elohim that answered all these dreams. The interpretation can only come from the one that gave the dream. YAH gives and interpret dreams through the Malachem.

The Operation of the Spirit

So far we have examined briefly the Malachem’s composition as spirits which are comprised of fire. We have seen that they are dispatched for a specific purpose, and give the oracles from YAH. We have looked at some of the uses YAH has for these spiritual beings and we will continue to define their function. It’s important we understand who they are, why they exist, and what there role and function are.

We have already read that YAH Makes his messengers Spirits and his servants a flaming fire. "Spirits" in Hebrew is Ruach which is an unseen type of force. You also have a force within your nostrils known as naphach which is the breath of life, an invisible force. We can classify it as Ruach, however it does not think or feel, that’s not its function, it’s to sustain life, provide oxygen to the brain and to the organs. There are other forms of Ruach (Spirit) and will examine these further.

YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, "Behold, I have called by name Betzal’el the son of Uri, the son of Chur, of the tribe of Judah: and I have filled him with the Spirit of Elohim, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to devise skillful works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in cutting of stones for setting, and in carving of wood, to work in all manner of workmanship. (Exo 31:1-5 RNWEB)
I, behold, I have appointed with him Oholi’av, the son of Achisamakh, of the tribe of Dan; and in the heart of all who are wise-hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, the ark of the testimony, the mercy seat that is on it, all the furniture of the Tent, the table and its vessels, the pure menorah with all its vessels, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering with all its vessels, the basin and its base, the finely worked garments--the holy garments for Aharon the Priest--the garments of his sons to minister in the Priest’s office, the anointing oil, and the incense of sweet spices for the holy place: according to all that I have commanded you they shall do." (Exo 31:6-11 RNWEB)

They were provided with a Spirit, an architect to show them how to make everything that Moshe was instructed to create for the tabernacle to the finest detail. YAH required perfection in the construction of His temple and knowing man could not do this on his own he gave them help. The only thing we can do on are own is show obedience to the Laws and precepts of Elohim, which are evidenced by our works.

"Bring Aharon your brother, and his sons with him, near to you from among the children of Yisra’el, that he may minister to me in the Priest’s office, even Aharon, Nadav and Avihu, El’azar and Itamar, Aharon’s sons. You shall make holy garments for Aharon your brother, for glory and for beauty. You shall speak to all who are wise-hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they make Aharon’s garments to sanctify him, that he may minister to me in the Priest’s office. (Exo 28:1-3 RNWEB)
YAH came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was on him, and put it on the seventy elders: and it happened that when the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did so no more. But there remained two men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the Spirit rested on them; and they were of those who were written, but had not gone out to the Tent; and they prophesied in the camp. There ran a young man, and told Moshe, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp. Yahoshua the son of Nun, the minister of Moshe, one of his chosen men, answered, My master Moshe, forbid them. Moshe said to him, Are you jealous for my sake? would that all YAH’s people were prophets, that YAH would put his Spirit on them! Moshe got him into the camp, he and the elders of Yisra’el. There went forth a wind from YAH, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day’s journey on this side, and a day’s journey on the other side, round about the camp, and about two cubits above the surface of the earth. (Num 11:25-31 RNWEB)

Seventy elders just received the Spirit, lets find out why:

YAH said to Moshe, Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Yisra’el, whom you know to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them to the tent of meeting, that they may stand there with you. I will come down and talk with you there: and I will take of the Spirit which is on you, and will put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you not bear it yourself alone. (Num 11:16-17 RNWEB)

YAH told Moshe to gather seventy men of Yisrael who he knew to be the elders of the people and officers over them, and to bring them to the Tent of Meeting so they could stand with him. This was so Moshe did not have to bear the burdens of the people alone! Each one needed the spirit to be able to deal with the nation of Yisrael.

What and who are the spirits resting on the people, what does this mean and what are they doing? Scripture said that they prophesied, which means to communicate a divine oracle through divine intervention.

YAH said to Moshe, Take Yahoshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; (Num 27:18 RNWEB)

Didn’t Sha’ul in the New Testament lay hands on people for the same reason? We see this first occurred in the Torah. Let’s look at this further:

Yahoshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moshe had laid his hands on him: and the children of Yisra’el listened to him, and did as YAH commanded Moshe. (Deu 34:9 RNWEB)

We see the evidence that the Spirit was imparted to Yahoshua through Moshe and the people listened to him.

As a side note, it’s important to understand that we do not receive new revelations or even new doctrine in the new testament. It’s just teaching about the sound doctrines that were laid down in the Torah. If we don’t approach the new testament books with an understanding of the old testament it will be impossible for us to comprehend properly what’s being taught. It would be like coming into a movie in the second half, without knowing what happened in the beginning the viewer ends up with many unanswered questions.

Therefore the anger of YAH was kindled against Yisra’el, and he sold them into the hand of Kushan-Rish’atayim king of Aram-Naharayim: and the children of Yisra’el served Kushan-Rish’atayim eight years. When the children of Yisra’el cried to YAH, YAH raised up a savior to the children of Yisra’el, who saved them, even ’Otni’el the son of Kenaz, Kalev’s younger brother. The Spirit of YAH came on him, and he judged Yisra’el; and he went out to war, and YAH delivered Kushan-Rish’atayim king of Aram-Naharayim into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Kushan-Rish’atayim. (Jdg 3:8-10 RNWEB)

Raising Judges

YAH said he would come to save Yisrael when they cried out to him, however it was not YAH himself, he sent his Spirit, the Malachem.

But the Spirit of YAH came on Gid’on; and he blew a trumpet; and Avi-Ezer was gathered together after him. (Jdg 6:34 RNWEB)
The woman bore a son, and named him Shimshon: and the child grew, and YAH blessed him. The Spirit of YAH began to move him in Machane-Dan, between Tzor’ah and Eshta’ol. (Jdg 13:24-25 RNWEB)

The Malachem are using vessels to perform the will and commands of YAH to achieve His purpose.

Shimshon went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Pelishtim. He came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Pelishtim: now therefore get her for me as wife. Then his father and his mother said to him, isn’t there a woman among the daughters of your brothers, or among all my people, that you go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Pelishtim? Shimshon said to his father, Get her for me; for she pleases me well. But his father and his mother didn’t know that it was of YAH; for he sought an occasion against the Pelishtim. Now at that time the Pelishtim had rule over Yisra’el. Then went Shimshon down, and his father and his mother, to Timnah, and came to the vineyards of Timnah: and behold, a young lion roared against him. The Spirit of YAH came mightily on him, and he tore him as he would have torn a kid; and he had nothing in his hand: but he didn’t tell his father or his mother what he had done. He went down, and talked with the woman, and she pleased Shimshon well. (Jdg 14:1-7 RNWEB)

YAH was softening Shimshon’s heart for a Pelishtim woman so he could create an opportunity to accomplish his purpose. This is no different then YAH hardening the heart of Pharaoh to also perform His will. The Malachem are the ones orchestrating the circumstances. We have seen many times where YAH provided wisdom through them to accomplish His purpose, in this instance He needed someone to exercise great strength to deliver Yisrael. Shimshon did not display any form of wisdom which can be seen by reading his chronicles, just strength.

Now Yiftach the Gil’adite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a prostitute: and Gil’ad became the father of Yiftach. Gil’ad’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove out Yiftach, and said to him, You shall not inherit in our father’s house; for you are the son of another woman. (Jdg 11:1-2 RNWEB)
Then the Spirit of YAH came on Yiftach, and he passed over Gil’ad and Menasheh, and passed over Mitzpeh of Gil’ad, and from Mitzpeh of Gil’ad he passed over to the children of ’Ammon. (Jdg 11:29 RNWEB)

Yiftach was a Judge like Gideon, Shimshon, and many of the men in the days of old. However what we want to establish is exactly what the Spirit is that they had.

Then was Daniyel brought in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniyel, Are you that Daniyel, who are of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah? I have heard of you, that the spirit of the elohims is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. Now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known to me the interpretation of it; but they could not show the interpretation of the thing. But I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations, and dissolve doubts; now if you can read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation of it, you shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom. (Dan 5:13-16 RNWEB)

Light, understanding, and excellent wisdom are found in Daniyel because the spirit of Elohim was in him. This is the very same thing Pharaoh said to Yoseph.

It happened, when they had gone over, that Eliyahu said to Elisha, Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you. Elisha said, please let a double portion of your spirit be on me. He said, You have asked a hard thing: [nevertheless], if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so to you; but if not, it shall not be so. It happened, as they still went on, and talked, that behold, [there appeared] a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, which parted them both apart; and Eliyahu went up by a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariots of Yisra’el and the horsemen of it! He saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and tore them in two pieces. He took up also the mantle of Eliyahu that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of the Yarden. He took the mantle of Eliyahu that fell from him, and struck the waters, and said, Where is YAH, the Elohim of Eliyahu? and when he also had struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha went over. When the sons of the prophets who were at Yericho over against him saw him, they said, The spirit of Eliyahu does rest on Elisha. They came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him. (2Ki 2:9-15 RNWEB)

What man do you know that could have divided the waters, specifically when there was no charge from YAH? However we must remember that Peter told us the spirit of the prophets are subject to the prophets. He also said that we are His witnesses, and so is the holy Spirit that Elohim has given to them that obey Him. We will elaborate further on this as we progress in the study.

Spirit of Prophecy

The Spirit of Elohim came on ’Azaryah the son of ’Oded: and he went out to meet Asa, and said to him, Hear you me, Asa, and all Judah and Binyamin: YAH is with you, while you are with him; and if you seek him, he will be found of you; but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. (2Ch 15:1-2 RNWEB)
Then on Yachazi’el the son of Zekharyah, the son of Benayah, the son of Ye’i’el, the son of Mattanyah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaf, came the Spirit of YAH in the midst of the assembly; and he said, Listen you, all Judah, and you inhabitants of Yerushalayim, and you king Yehoshafat: Thus says YAH to you, Don’t be afraid you, neither be dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but Elohim’s. (2Ch 20:14-15 RNWEB)

Here we have a situation where YAH waited a few days before speaking to the people, which were in the midst of a crisis. The sons of moab and others were coming together to destroy the sons of Yisrael. The spirit of Elohim waited because he was watching and observing to see how they would respond in a time of crisis. Their response dictated how the Malachem (Spirit of Elohim) would respond. We will see more of this latter, however at this point are emphases is on prophecy.

Now after the death of Yehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king listened to them. They forsook the house of YAH, the Elohim of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols: and wrath came on Judah and Yerushalayim for this their guiltiness. Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again to YAH; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear. The Spirit of Elohim came on Zekharyah the son of Yehoiada the Priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them,Thus says Elohim, Why disobey you the commandments of YAH, so that you can’t prosper? because you have forsaken YAH, he has also forsaken you. (2Ch 24:17-20 RNWEB)

The question "Why are you transgressing the commands of YAH, so you do not prosper" was not spoken until after the spirit came on Zekharyah. So who is speaking, the man or the Spirit using the man as a vessel? Remember what the Spirit of Elohim said to Hanniah after he had baptized Sha’ul (Paul), He said Sha’ul is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name unto kings and the gentiles.

Then the Spirit came on ’Amasai, who was chief of the thirty, [and he said], "We are yours, David, and on your side, you son of Yishai: peace, peace be to you, and peace be to your helpers; for your Elohim helps you." Then David received them, and made them captains of the band. (1Ch 12:18 RNWEB)
Sha’ul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Shemu’el standing as head over them, the Spirit of Elohim came on the messengers of Sha’ul, and they also prophesied. (1Sa 19:20 RNWEB)

Everyone that the Spirit of Elohim came on are doing an ecclesiastical work. The Spirit did not come on any one just for the sake of doing it, when a spiritual gift was given it was for a particular purpose that would accomplish YAH’s will. Compare these examples to what we see today in the Christian church, where people claim to have been "born again" and cleansed from all there bad habits because they received the spirit. However if you ask them the name of the Father, they say Jesus; Ask them what day the Sabbath is and they say Sunday; Ask them if they keep the law and festivals, and they say no. What spirit has come on them as they walk lawless and unsanctified before YAH?

Then Shemu’el took the vial of oil, and poured it on his head, and kissed him, and said, Isn’t it that YAH has anointed you to be prince over his inheritance? When you are departed from me today, then you shall find two men by Rachel’s tomb, in the border of Binyamin at Tzeltzach; and they will tell you, The donkeys which you went to seek are found; and behold, your father has left off caring for the donkeys, and is anxious for you, saying, What shall I do for my son? Then shall you go on forward from there, and you shall come to the oak of Tavor; and there shall meet you there three men going up to Elohim to Beit-El, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine: and they will greet you, and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive of their hand. After that you shall come to the hill of Elohim, where is the garrison of the Pelishtim: and it shall happen, when you are come there to the city, that you shall meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tambourine, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they will be prophesying: and the Spirit of YAH will come mightily on you, and you shall prophesy with them, and shall be turned into another man. (1Sa 10:1-6 RNWEB)
Let it be, when these signs are come to you, that you do as occasion shall serve you; for Elohim is with you. You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shall you wait, until I come to you, and show you what you shall do. It was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Shemu’el, Elohim gave him another heart: and all those signs happened that day. When they came there to the hill, behold, a band of prophets met him; and the Spirit of Elohim came mightily on him, and he prophesied among them. It happened, when all who knew him before saw that, behold, he prophesied with the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come to the son of Kish? Is Sha’ul also among the prophets? (1Sa 10:7-11 RNWEB)

Sha’ul was just anointed king, the spirit came on him and he prophesied, he became a new man. Didn’t Yahshua experience the same thing after receiving the spirit, he became another man. This is almost a perfect parallel that will go into more detail on, later in the study.

Then Nachash the ’Ammonite came up, and encamped against Yavesh-Gil’ad: and all the men of Yavesh said to Nachash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you. Nachash the ’Ammonite said to them, On this condition will I make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach on all Yisra’el. The elders of Yavesh said to him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers to all the borders of Yisra’el; and then, if there be none to save us, we will come out to you. Then came the messengers to Gevah of Sha’ul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept. Behold, Sha’ul came following the oxen out of the field; and Sha’ul said, What ails the people that they weep? They told him the words of the men of Yavesh. The Spirit of Elohim came mightily on Sha’ul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly. He took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Yisra’el by the hand of messengers, saying, Whoever doesn’t come forth after Sha’ul and after Shemu’el, so shall it be done to his oxen. The dread of YAH fell on the people, and they came out as one man. He numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Yisra’el were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. They said to the messengers who came, Thus shall you tell the men of Yavesh-Gil’ad, Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have deliverance. The messengers came and told the men of Yavesh; and they were glad. Therefore the men of Yavesh said, Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you. It was so on the next day, that Sha’ul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the ’Ammonim until the heat of the day: and it happened, that those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together. The people said to Shemu’el, Who is he who said, Shall Sha’ul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death. Sha’ul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day; for today YAH has worked deliverance in Yisra’el. Then said Shemu’el to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there. All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Sha’ul king before YAH in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before YAH; and there Sha’ul and all the men of Yisra’el rejoiced greatly. (1Sa 11:1-15 RNWEB)

The Spirit of Elohim came on Sha’ul in order for him to speak what Elohim wanted him to say, and even though he had the spirit of Elohim, he still had his own free will. He was commanded not to enter the office of a priest or offer up sacrifices and he did anyway, he was also commanded to kill Amalek with all there livestock, however he saved Amalek and some of the live stock. Therefore YAH said to Shemuel the prophet that he would take the kingdom away from him. So having the spirit of Elohim does not mean you cannot be disobedient and turn from following YAH. That’s why Sha’ul (Paul) said in the New Testament, "grieve not the holy spirit by which you are sealed to the day of redemption." We can also draw the conclusion that the Holy Spirit (the Malachem) will never force someone to do something that is against their own free will. Let’s see how YAH dealt with Sha’ul’s disobedience:

He sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy (redish brown, dark hued), and withal of a beautiful face, and goodly to look on. YAH said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he. Then Shemu’el took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: and the Spirit of YAH came mightily on David from that day forward. So Shemu’el rose up, and went to Ramah. Now the Spirit of YAH departed from Sha’ul, and an evil spirit from YAH troubled him. (1Sa 16:12-14 RNWEB)

Yisrael now has a new King in the eyes of YAH who was assigned a Malachem from the day of his anointing. At the same time Sha’ul lost the Spirit and was vexed by a evil spirit. Notice that it was YAH that put the evil (unholy) spirit on Sha’ul.

Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Yishai says, the man who was raised on high says, the anointed of the Elohim of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Yisra’el: The Spirit of YAH spoke by me. His word was on my tongue. The Elohim of Yisra’el said, the Rock of Yisra’el spoke to me, one who rules over men righteously, who rules in the fear of Elohim, (2Sa 23:1-3 RNWEB)

David said, The spirit of YAH was on my tongue. The Malachem under a mandate from the Most High used a chosen vessel to speak YAH’s word. David was not speaking, it was the Malachem performing there duty as an ambassador of YAH.

[Mikhayahu] said, "Therefore hear the word of YAH: I saw YAH sitting on his throne, and all the army of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. YAH said, ’Who shall entice Ach’av, that he may go up and fall at Ramot Gil’ad?’ One said on this manner; and another said on that manner. There came forth a spirit, and stood before YAH, and said, ’I will entice him.’ YAH said to him, ’How?’ He said, ’I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ He said, ’You shall entice him, and shall prevail also: go forth, and do so.’ (1Ki 22:19-22 RNWEB)

Here we see something interesting, YAH wanted Ach’av to go up and die at Ramot Gil’ad, and he was consulting with the Malachem, one stood forward and said "Let me entice him" YAH asked in what way, and the Malak said he would become a lying spirit in the mouths of Ach’av’s prophets. The Malachem was given charge to do all he proposed. So we have an Angel doing the work of what today’s church would call an evil spirit. However we have an example here of YAH’s Malachem giving voice to the false prophets of Ach’av. Do you think if he did it in this situation he has done it in others? Give this some thought as we continue.

Yes, they made their hearts as hard as flint, lest they might hear the law, and the words which YAH of Armies had sent by his Spirit by the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from YAH of Armies. (Zec 7:12 RNWEB)

Yisrael’s hearts were as hard as flint against hearing the Torah and the words of YAH that were sent by the Malachem through former prophets. It goes onto say a great wrath came from "YAH of Armies," telling us the Malachem were given charge to execute this wrath or judgement.

Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against you, and cast your law behind their back, and killed your prophets that testified against them to turn them again to you, and they committed awful blasphemies. Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried to you, you heard from heaven; and according to your manifold mercies you gave them saviors who saved them out of the hand of their adversaries. But after they had rest, they did evil again before you; therefore left you them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried to you, you heard from heaven; and many times did you deliver them according to your mercies, and testified against them, that you might bring them again to your law. Yet they dealt proudly, and didn’t listen to your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances, (which if a man do, he shall live in them), and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear. Yet many years did you bear with them, and testified against them by your Spirit through your prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gave you them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. (Neh 9:26-30 RNWEB)

Summing Up

The Malachem are the agents of YAH that give voice to the prophets, they are watchers that execute rewards and judgment by the word of YAH. Their eyes search the earth looking for the righteous and broken-hearted.

We have seen many situations where YAH used the Malachem to act as His agents to perform His purpose. They are called by many titles in scripture such as "Spirit of Elohim," "Spirit of the Lord," "Holy Spirit" and "the Spirit." YAH dispatched them and gave them commandments and assignments of all types. The scriptures we have reviewed so far show us the Malachem were used:

  • As representatives of YAH.
  • As watchers (YAH's eyes and ears).
  • For the creation.
  • To give wisdom and understanding to men.
  • For Prophecy.
  • To provide strength and leadership qualities to men
  • For dreams and interpretations.
  • As a lying spirit.
  • For acts that are beyond mans ability, such as splitting the waters.
  • To orchestrate circumstances to accomplish YAH's will.
  • To deliver YAH's wrath.
