The Mind Heart Connection I

The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the manifestation of the Spirit specifically focusing on one aspect of its multiple meanings. Many Theologians, Hebrews, and Christians alike teach on topics driven by unique cultural words which may have several meanings and connotations. It’s important to understand that a single word can have multiple meanings, and is a rule in most languages, including Hebrew, therefore we need to be careful to take this into consideration when studying the scripture. Sadly, Christian and Hebraic bodies examination of New Testament studies are often in error, frequently injecting felicitous slants and obscure words because they lack the understanding of how a word with multiple meanings is used and the message the author intended. Therefore, we will be addressing the following questions among others.

  • What is the heart?
  • What is the conscience?
  • What prompts an emotion?
  • What part does the mind play?
  • What is a willing mind?
  • How do we obtain a perfect and complete state of mind?
  • Who are the wicked?
  • How does the law help us walk in righteousness?
  • How will we be judged?

Our objective is to isolate one manifestation of the Spirit and use it in context with the scripture to understand the meaning the author was trying to convey. We will also examine what scripture says about obtaining a perfect or complete state of mind which speaks to stability, peace, comfort, assurance, security, and wellness.

But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in YAH, and admonish you, and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. We exhort you, brothers, ADMONISH THE DISORDERLY, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be patient toward all. See that no one returns evil for evil to anyone, but always follow after that which is good, for one another, and for all. Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of Elohim in the Anointed Yahshua toward you. Don’t quench the Spirit. Don’t despise prophesies. Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good. Abstain from every form of evil. MAY THE ELOHIM OF PEACE HIMSELF SANCTIFY YOU COMPLETELY. MAY YOUR WHOLE SPIRIT, SOUL, AND BODY BE PRESERVED BLAMELESS AT THE COMING OF OUR MASTER YAHSHUA THE ANOINTED. He who calls you is faithful, who will also do it. (1 Thessalonians 5:12-24 RNEB)

This will be the heart of our study, which is to understand the Spirit Sha’ul is speaking about in this verse.

YAH saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that EVERY IMAGINATION OF THE THOUGHTS OF HIS HEART WAS ONLY EVIL CONTINUALLY. (Genesis 6:5 RNEB)

The heart is an organ that pumps blood, it has a function, however it says in this verse “every imagination of the THOUGHTS OF HIS HEART was only evil continually.” The heart does not think, only the mind thinks, so this verse is saying mans thoughts were continually focused on evil. What we will see is that everything about us as individuals begins in the mind. Whether we’re insecure or confident, scared or brave, haughty or humble, it begins with the mind.

Let’s look more closely at the Hebrew word and meaning for heart which is “leb”. When we go throughout the scriptures and see heart and mind used, it’s centered on an intangible, as a result of this it holds spiritual connotations, however it becomes tangible when it manifests itself as a work.

Leb means:

The inner man, mind, will, heart, soul, understanding, inner part, midst, body, knowledge, thinking, reflection, memory, inclination, resolution, seat of emotions, and the conscience.

The word is used to represent the conscience throughout the scripture. We have to remember it was Hebrews who wrote the book to other Hebrews, and they wrote it based on their culture, with a full understanding of their language.

What has happened throughout the generations is the Hebraic scriptures have been transitioned into the culture that best fits the reader, as a result they have been translated or interpreted to say what man thinks they should based on their cultures prevalent beliefs . We have to approach the scripture according to the original culture, laws, and language of the writers, the way YAH ordained it to the sons of Yisrael. What we will learn is whatever is in the mind is going to produce an emotion, a desire, and once it’s conceived it will produce a work or action. Consequently, if we can learn to bring our thoughts into submission, we won’t have to worry about creating or stimulating an emotional desire contrary to the law. James called it lust, which leads to covetousness, greed, hatred, and every evil thought, which produces a corresponding emotion, then an action that will be documented by the watchers [angels]. This is the reason why the ancients tell us that “leb” not only deals with the mind but also with the emotions, the two work hand in hand.

These are the words of the covenant which YAH commanded Moshe to make with the children of Yisra’el in the land of Mo’av, besides the covenant which he made with them in Chorev. Moshe called to all Yisra’el, and said to them, You have seen all that YAH did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Par’oh, and to all his servants, and to all his land; the great trials which your eyes saw, the signs, and those great wonders: but YAH has not given you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, to this day. I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes have not grown old on you, and your shoe has not grown old on your foot. You have not eaten bread, neither have you drunk wine or strong drink; that you may know that I am YAH your Elohim. When you came to this place, Sichon the king of Cheshbon, and ’Og the king of Bashan, came out against us to battle, and we struck them: and we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance to the Re’uveni, and to the Gadi, and to the half-tribe of the Manashi. Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do. (Deuteronomy 29:1-9 RNEB)

When we speak to a person, do we first speak to their heart or their mind? We speak to the mind, and this may prompt an emotional response, a feeling. Everything always starts with a communication to the mind, which can occur through any of our senses.

Moshe is talking to the sons of Yisrael, telling them to keep the words of the covenant and do them. “Do” is an action word that’s looking for a response. Moshe is making a statement to the mind that should stimulate an emotion which is going to cause an action or work.

Lets review the process, something is communicated to the mind, which then prompts a feeling or emotion, the emotion is expressed through an action or a work.

We can always tell if a person has been reformed by the word of YAH by how they respond in adversity and live within the social construct. There are many things that influence us in every day life that may be appealing, attractive, and tempting, how we deal with these feelings and desires in the environment around us will reveal if we’re following YAH’s ordinances or those of the adversary. The thoughts we have during these experiences, if left unchecked will drive us into sin, however if we maintain YAH’s laws and ordinances as the standard that all other things are judged by we will remain true to the word and righteousness. Our most predominant thoughts will always dictate our actions. All our problems, issues, and challenges are products of our mind, we’re responsible, in Genesis six it says “every imagination of the thoughts of mans heart were evil continually,” these our mans thoughts not a demon or someone else’s. The adversary can only try to tempt or influence us through the things we are already inclined to do.

My son, don’t forget my teaching; but let your heart keep my commandments: (Proverbs 3:1 RNEB)

Remember what we said about “leb” it means knowledge, thinking, reflection, and MEMORY. It goes on to say “let your heart keep my law,” which can also be written, let your MIND keep my commandments, heart is not relevant here because what we’re looking at is the mind, however we also know that it works with our organs, which is reflected in our emotions, they work together. There are three progressive tiers, first the mind, then emotions, and finally the work or response. The work is what we will be judged by.

for LENGTH OF DAYS, AND YEARS OF LIFE, AND PEACE, will they add to you. Don’t let kindness and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor, and good understanding in the sight of Elohim and man. Trust in YAH with all your heart, and DON’T LEAN ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING. (Proverbs 3:2-5 RNEB)

Everything goes back to the mind, the scripture continues to mention the heart, because that’s the emotions. The things that we do, our works or actions are brought about by an emotion. It always starts with the mind, we need to understand why our mind thinks what it does. There is something wrong if our mind begins to entertain things that are antagonistic and contrary to the will of YAH. That’s why we’re told not to FORGET the commandments, not only in our minds but in our emotions, that is why the term heart is being used, it best represents the mind and emotions together. If we can do this, will have length of days, years of life, and peace. We need to have a spiritual mind, which is stimulated and brought about by the law of Elohim.

Don’t lean on your own understanding – Doctrine is everything that proceeds from the law and the prophets, not our own understanding. Man often has many ideas concerning a matter, so if we all leaned on our own understanding, then no one would ever agree. The only thing that’s universally accepted by those that bend their knee to a sovereign name and creator is Elohim’s word.

What YAH says in the law and by the prophets must be the final word!

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Don’t be wise in your own eyes. Fear YAH, and depart from evil. It will be health to your body, and nourishment to your bones. (Proverbs 3:6-8 RNEB)

It’s the laws and commandments of YAH that are supposed to sustain us. A person that is insecure, afraid, and cannot accept constructive criticism has something detrimental going on in their mind. There is something that happened that caused their mind to be weakened, allowing for a spirit or consciousness of fear to be predominant.

For the word of Elohim is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 RNEB)

YAH’s word can discern and determine the thoughts and intentions of the mind and emotions by being the standard in which all things are judged. If we allow the word of Elohim to be alive in us by studying and meditating on it, the flesh will no longer rule over our minds, we will be free from its lusts and desires.

It shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book, out of [that which is] before the priests the Levites: and it shall be with him, and HE SHALL READ THEREIN ALL THE DAYS OF HIS LIFE; THAT HE MAY LEARN TO FEAR YAH HIS ELOHIM, TO KEEP ALL THE WORDS OF THIS LAW AND THESE STATUTES, TO DO THEM; that his heart not be lifted up above his brothers, and that he not turn aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children, in the midst of Yisra’el. (Deuteronomy 17:18-20 RNEB)
It happened, when Moshe had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, that Moshe commanded the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of YAH, saying, Take this scroll of the Torah, and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of YAH your Elohim, that it may be there for a witness against you. For I know your rebellion, and your stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, you have been rebellious against YAH; and how much more after my death? Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to witness against them. For I know that after my death you will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; AND EVIL WILL HAPPEN TO YOU IN THE LATTER DAYS; BECAUSE YOU WILL DO THAT WHICH IS EVIL IN THE SIGHT OF YAH, TO PROVOKE HIM TO ANGER THROUGH THE WORK OF YOUR HANDS. (Deuteronomy 31:24-29 RNEB)

If we think it, we’re going to feel it, if we feel it, we’re going to do or react to it! That’s the human condition, there is no magic formula, if someone does something, it’s because they wanted to do it, they reasoned it in their heart (mind and emotions) first.

Now it happened after the death of Moshe the servant of YAH, that YAH spoke to Yahoshua the son of Nun, Moshe’ servant, saying, Moshe my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Yarden, you, and all this people, to the land which I give to them, even to the children of Yisra’el. I have given you every place that the sole of your foot will tread on, as I told Moshe. From the wilderness, and this Levanon, even to the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Chitti, and to the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your border. No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moshe, so I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you. Be strong and of good courage; for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. ONLY BE STRONG AND VERY COURAGEOUS, TO OBSERVE TO DO ACCORDING TO ALL THE LAW, WHICH MOSHE MY SERVANT COMMANDED YOU. DON’T TURN FROM IT TO THE RIGHT HAND OR TO THE LEFT, THAT YOU MAY HAVE GOOD SUCCESS WHEREVER YOU GO. (Joshua 1:1-7 RNEB)

Let’s look at examples of people who didn’t turn to the right or left. When Daniyel was told to eat the unclean animals that were prepared by the servant of Nevukhadnetzar, Daniyel told the servant he wouldn’t eat those abominations, and asked to be fed water and vegetables for ten days and then have his health compared to the others. The servant returned and found Daniyel’s skin without blemish or wrinkle in good health, he then compared him to the others who ate the normal food of the Kings table and found them to have wrinkles and not in as good health. Daniyel made it clear he observed a divinely commanded diet and would not turn against it. Then we have the four Hebrew children who refused to worship the kings golden statue after being threatened by a fiery death, they never even consider breaking a commandment of YAH, and said there Elohim would deliver them from the furnace, and if he didn’t that was ok too. In neither of these situations did we see them even considering breaking the laws of YAH. The laws were the foremost thing in their mind, and they were stable in their emotions, and as a result were stead fast in the faith.

This scroll of THE TORAH SHALL NOT DEPART OUT OF YOUR MOUTH, BUT YOU SHALL MEDITATE ON IT DAY AND NIGHT, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for THEN YOU SHALL MAKE YOUR WAY PROSPEROUS, AND THEN YOU SHALL HAVE GOOD SUCCESS. (Joshua 1:8 RNEB)

Prosperity and success are being linked to meditating on the law day and night. Everything is linked to the mind, if we have lawless works, it’s because we have a lawless mind.

YOUR HEART WILL MEDITATE ON THE TERROR. Where is he who counted? Where is he who weighed? Where is he who counted the towers? (Isaiah 33:18 RNEB)

Meditating on terror would be having unstable thoughts such as, I’m going to get fired, I’m going to get in an accident, and those people hate me, all with no specific reason. This is caused by constantly meditating on different fears (bad things), which would stimulate the emotions causing the resulting action.

Then came certain of the elders of Yisra’el to me, and sat before me. The word of YAH came to me, saying, Son of man, THESE MEN HAVE TAKEN THEIR IDOLS INTO THEIR HEART, and put the stumbling block of their lawlessness before their face: should I be inquired of at all by them? (Ezekiel 14:1-3 RNEB)

It all starts with the mind, the things we imagine and think. What we think will prompt an emotion or feeling, what we feel will determine our behavior or action. Any thought that we entertain that goes against YAH’s laws and ordinances is an idol, something we have put above the word of Elohim.

Therefore speak to them, and tell them, Thus says YAH Elohim: Every man of the house of Yisra’el who takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his lawlessness before his face, and comes to the prophet; I YAH will answer him therein according to the multitude of his idols; that I may take the house of Yisra’el in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols. Therefore tell the house of Yisra’el, Thus says YAH Elohim: Return you, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations. For everyone of the house of Yisra’el, or of the strangers who sojourn in Yisra’el, who separates himself from me, and takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his lawlessness before his face, and comes to the prophet to inquire for himself of me; I YAH will answer him by myself: (Ezekiel 14:4-7 RNEB)
For all this I laid to my heart, even to explore all this: that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of Elohim; whether it is love or hatred, man doesn’t know it; all is before them. All things come alike to all. There is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good, to the clean, to the unclean, to him who sacrifices, and to him who doesn’t sacrifice. As is the good, so is the sinner; he who takes an oath, as he who fears an oath. This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event to all: yes also, the heart of the sons of men is FULL OF EVIL, AND MADNESS IS IN THEIR HEART WHILE THEY LIVE, and after that they go to the dead. (Ecclesiastes 9:1-3 RNEB)

The ancients tell us if we can fix our mind, we will have won the battle within ourselves, the battle against sin.

Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. (Ecclesiastes 8:11 RNEB)

Man continually walks in sin because they don’t see any consequences for their actions, they commit iniquity, and nothing happens in a day, week, or even a month later, so they continue to walk in sin. The mind becomes more corrupt because they justify the act by assuming there is no judgment (punishment), so the mind keeps reaching more toward iniquity and their actions continue to get worse.

Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers; but HIS DELIGHT IS IN YAH’S LAW. ON HIS LAW HE MEDITATES DAY AND NIGHT. (Psalms 1:1-2 RNEB)
I hate double-minded men, but I love your law. (Psalms 119:113 RNEB)

If we’re diligent and put the time in to meditating and studying the word of Elohim, we will begin to adopt what YAH is saying, and what he’s feeling. His code of ethics is tangible, and his word will generate feelings and emotions that will produce works of righteousness.

As believers we are in the midst of a society that is completely lawless. We participate in their entertainment, work in their offices and factories, and to some extent interact with them all day long to varying degrees. It’s important we understand where to draw the line. There are certainly very clear cut areas, such as holidays, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, etc.. Then of course we abstain from all unclean foods and from building close relationships with non believers. However, what about entertainment, the movies we watch, the music we listen to, the games we play, and the books we read. This is dependent on the stability of our mind, which is something only we can determine.

YAH said he was going to leave the nations around us, and they would be a worldly influence on us to see if we would adopt their conduct and behavior. For example, we know from scripture Lot was a righteous man, however he was vexed with the conversations of the wicked and their lawless deeds. The scripture doesn’t tell us he became a lawless man on account of his environment, he kept his mind focused on the word of Elohim. There are several things in our surrounding environments that can influence us if we allow our mind to become weakened by opposing influences. If we adopt paganistic views and practices we will be ensnared by them. We need to control our surroundings, the relationships we build, and the people we talk to. We need to be able to identify the forms of entertainment that produce the wrong thoughts and emotions, as well as anything that YAH would consider an abomination, and turn away from them. It simply comes down to what we can tolerate, and what’s not going to influence us in a wrong way, the choice is ours.

Lets read what Sha’ul said about relationships:

I wrote to you in my letter to HAVE NO COMPANY WITH SEXUAL SINNERS; yet not at all meaning with the sexual sinners of this world, or with the covetous and extortioners, or with idolaters; for then you would have to leave the world. But as it is, I WROTE TO YOU NOT TO ASSOCIATE WITH ANYONE WHO IS CALLED A BROTHER WHO IS A SEXUAL SINNER, OR COVETOUS, OR AN IDOLATER, OR A SLANDERER, OR A DRUNKARD, OR AN EXTORTIONER. DON’T EVEN EAT WITH SUCH A PERSON. (1 Corinthians 5:9-11 RNEB)
DON’T BE UNEQUALLY YOKED WITH UNBELIEVERS, for what fellowship has righteousness and lawlessness? Or what communion has light with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14 RNEB)

Sha’ul recognized that we cannot judge non believers, but only those that profess righteousness, else we would have to leave the world. Consequently, he was saying the superficial relationships we develop with outsiders cannot be avoided, and we should be careful not to become unequally yoked with them. However, the people we allow into our inner circle, the ones we consider like minded fellow believers, to protect ourselves, we cannot associate with those who profess righteousness but their attitudes and actions are contrary to the word of Elohim.

There are several examples of people in the scripture that lived and interacted with pagans and remained righteous. Lot, Yosef in Egypt, Daniyel, the three Hebrew children that were thrown into the fiery furnace, and Yahshua himself. They were all able to do business with them, work for them, and sometimes rule over them, and still remain faithful to YAH. We can do the same if the word of Elohim is our foundation and the standard we live by.

WHY DO YOU STAND FAR OFF, YAH? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? (Psalms 10:1 RNEB)

This happens when we’re disobedient, why should we be rewarded or comforted when we don’t follow the laws and ordinances of Elohim?

In arrogance, the wicked hunt down the weak. They are caught in the schemes that they devise. For the wicked boasts of his heart’s cravings. He blesses the greedy, and condemns YAH. THE WICKED, IN THE PRIDE OF HIS FACE, HAS NO ROOM IN HIS THOUGHTS FOR ELOHIM. (Psalms 10:2-4 RNEB)

Who are the wicked ones? If Elohim is not in our thoughts, we will be. Yahshua manifested himself as a righteous one, a glorious image of Elohim because he was perfect in YAH’s code of ethics. This is what we must work and aspire to. To achieve this, we must first have Elohim in our thoughts. Many of us make bad decisions because Elohim’s word is not the foremost thought in our mind. We should be concerned with what would please the Most High first, and not what we desire. The wicked don’t have Elohim in their thoughts, they choose to follow their OWN SELF MADE standards of morality and righteousness.

YAH knows the thoughts of man, THAT THEY ARE FUTILE. Blessed is the man whom you discipline, YAH, AND TEACH OUT OF YOUR LAW; (Psalms 94:11-12 RNEB)

The laws of Elohim are pure, if everyone lived by them society would be almost disease free. For example, many of the diseases people suffer from are related to the afflictions that come from a bad diet. There are many evils that can be purged just by meditating and following the laws of Elohim.

Seven times a day, I praise you, because of your righteous ordinances. THOSE WHO LOVE YOUR LAW HAVE GREAT PEACE. NOTHING CAUSES THEM TO STUMBLE. (Psalms 119:164-165 RNEB)

Those who love the law have great peace, but only if it is in our mind, we are consistently told throughout the scripture to meditate on the word. For example, Abraham lived for almost 20 years with a name that meant the father of many nations, however he had no children, all he had was YAH’s promise of a reward for walking righteously. He held on to the promise until he was 100 years old, then Sarai his wife finally gave birth to Isaac. Abraham never doubted YAH’s word, he faithfully kept the laws and ordinances of his covenant with him. We need to have this type of Faith in the Father and walk steadfast in our covenant with him, by being obedient to all the laws and ordinances of Elohim, and demonstrating it through our works.

How love I your law! IT IS MY MEDITATION ALL DAY. (Psalms 119:97 RNEB)

Many people in Christiandom believe they have the Holy Spirit and no longer need to follow the law. However, David had the Holy Spirit, and he still followed and needed the law. What we’re looking for is peace, happiness, stability, prosperity, and the approval of Elohim why we live in this system. All of us that are sincere and know the truth will desire to go through the mandated process to receive eternal life.

Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, for your commandments are always with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, because I have kept your precepts. I have kept my feet from every evil way, that I might observe your word. I have not turned aside from your ordinances, for you have taught me. How sweet are your promises to my taste, more than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts, I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. (Psalms 119:98-104 RNEB)
YAH’s law is perfect, restoring the soul. YAH’s testimony is sure, making wise the simple. (Psalms 19:7 RNEB)

The law restores or converts a person, however this can only happen if it is received in the mind.

YAH’s precepts are right, rejoicing the heart. YAH’s commandment is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of YAH is clean, enduring forever. YAH’s ordinances are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yes, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the extract of the honeycomb. Moreover by them is your servant warned. IN KEEPING THEM THERE IS GREAT REWARD. (Psalms 19:8-11 RNEB)

There is a great reward for keeping the laws, precepts, and statutes of Elohim. We’re being promised we will be rewarded and our way will be prosperous, so we can find success, if we keep the commandments and meditate on his precepts. The laws of Elohim are what drive us to success, stability, and peace, however if we don’t meditate on them, there is no point in trying to keep them.

In that day, this song will be sung in the land of Judah: “We have a strong city. Elohim appoints salvation for walls and bulwarks. Open the gates, that the righteous nation may enter: the one which keeps faith. YOU WILL KEEP WHOEVER’S MIND IS STEADFAST IN PERFECT PEACE, BECAUSE HE TRUSTS IN YOU. (Isaiah 26:1-3 RNEB)

If we trust [solely depend on] our spouse or anyone else before the Most High, we’re going to have problems. We cannot place anyone above him! If we focus on Elohim, and what he expects from us, then try to exceed those expectations, we will excel in our other relationships. This can only happen if YAH is the most important thing in our life and following and meditating on his laws are first place.

You, Shlomo my son, know the Elohim of your father, AND SERVE HIM WITH A PERFECT HEART AND WITH A WILLING MIND; for YAH searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts: if you seek him, he will be found of you; but IF YOU FORSAKE HIM, HE WILL CAST YOU OFF FOREVER. (1 Chronicles 28:9 RNEB)

Willing Mind – Based on the original Hebrew this would more accurately be translated, the complete being, meaning all the strength and assets of our mind, will, and emotions.

But the unclean spirit, when he is gone out of the man, passes through waterless places, seeking rest, and doesn’t find it. Then he says, ’I will return into my house from which I came out,’ and WHEN HE HAS COME BACK, HE FINDS IT EMPTY, SWEPT, AND PUT IN ORDER. Then he goes, and takes with himself seven other spirits more evil than he is, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first. Even so will it be also to this evil generation.” (Matthew 12:44-45 RNEB)

We can clean ourselves up, but if we don’t rebuild the foundation our life is based on success will be short lived, and ultimately we will end up worse than when we started. The only acceptable foundation is the laws and precepts of YAH.

They went into Peterr-Nachum, and immediately on the day of Sabbath he entered into the synagogue and taught. They were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as having authority, and not as the scribes. IMMEDIATELY THERE WAS IN THEIR SYNAGOGUE A MAN WITH AN UNCLEAN SPIRIT, AND HE CRIED OUT, SAYING, “HA! WHAT DO WE HAVE TO DO WITH YOU, YAHSHUA, YOU NATZRI? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are: the Holy One of Elohim!” Yahshua rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” The unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. (Mark 1:21-26 RNEB)

We can learn something from the unclean Spirit in the assembly, just because someone is attending a believers assembly does not mean they’re clean. Assemblies for the most part are public places, and we don’t know who we’re worshipping with, however if anyone starts to truly hear the truth and meditates on the word of Elohim an unholy spirit will leave, because there would be no reason for it to stay after losing its influence.

We should never assume because someone is doing wrong they have a demon. Actually, most of the time a person does wrong because they want to. To have a demon would mean a person completely forsook the covenant and their mind was consumed with unclean thoughts. The difference between someone who just did wrong and someone who continuously does wrong is the same as someone who sins and one who is a sinner. The one that is a sinner will be more likely to host an unclean spirit because they have turned their nature and character over to sin. In other words, an unclean Spirit is more likely to find rest in a sinner, one who continually sins, rather than someone who sins because they made a bad judgment or error, one whose character is generally righteous, but they made a mistake.

They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadara. When he had come out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling in the tombs. Nobody could bind him any more, not even with chains, because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the fetters broken in pieces. Nobody had the strength to tame him. Always, night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones. When he saw Yahshua from afar, he ran and bowed down to him, and crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have I to do with you, Yahshua, you Son of the El ’Elyon? I adjure you by Elohim, don’t torment me.” For he said to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” He asked him, “What is your name?” He said to him, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” He begged him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was on the mountainside a great herd of pigs feeding. All the demons begged him, saying, “Send us into the pigs, that we may enter into them.” At once Yahshua gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and entered into the pigs. The herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and they were drowned in the sea. Those who fed them fled, and told it in the city and in the country. The people came to see what it was that had happened. They came to Yahshua, and saw him who had been possessed by demons sitting, clothed, and in his right mind, even him who had the legion; and they were afraid. (Mark 5:1-15 RNEB)

If a person has an unclean Spirit there mind had to be already corrupted in order for it to enter, and when the Spirit comes it multiplies the corruption, then they will think and do the vilest of acts. Our intentions start in the mind, so we give an unclean Spirit permission to dwell with us by our thoughts. An unclean Spirit cannot come near someone who has a hedge built around them by Elohim. The hedge is only there while we are walking righteously, which requires following and meditating on the laws and precepts of YAH with a pure heart.

In order for this hedge to be removed, we have to give permission to the ministering Spirit that watches over us, documents what we say and do, and pulls us out of trials and tribulations, to turn away. If this happens, we become an open door for an unclean spirit. We give the spirit permission by not following and giving attention to the laws and precepts of Elohim. We are all sheep, the field is the earth, and we choose our chief shepherd by our thoughts and actions, it’s either YAH, or Satan.

Shemu’el said, Has YAH as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of YAH? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and wickedness. Because you have rejected the word of YAH, he has also rejected you from being king. Sha’ul said to Shemu’el, I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of YAH, and your words, because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship YAH. Shemu’el said to Sha’ul, I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of YAH, and YAH has rejected you from being king over Yisra’el. (1 Samuel 15:22-26 RNEB)
Then Shemu’el took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: and the Spirit of YAH came mightily on David from that day forward. So Shemu’el rose up, and went to Ramah. Now the Spirit of YAH departed from Sha’ul, and an evil spirit from YAH troubled him. (1 Samuel 16:13-14 RNEB)

Summing up

The word spirit has been presented in its true form, in a context that helps us understand that when we hear the word spirit it’s not exclusively referring to angels. The word spirit can have multiple meaning depending on the context in which it has been applied. The new testament uses the word frequently, and it’s often referring to the mind, the whole self, the things we think, which dictate behavior and the choices we make.

Many talk about the heart as a representation of the human spirit, which is often considered a separate entity from the body and soul, however the heart is a muscle, it cannot think. The mind is our consciousness where thoughts are stored. The influences that form the thoughts are what we need to examine, what we see, where we go, and the company we keep. For example, there are many diverse choices of entertainment, they all present us with specific feelings and ideas, they make impressions on the mind which can dictate behavior that can be seen outwardly. Our behavior is a manifestation of our mental diet and reflects the thoughts our mind is keeping, which is preceded by the things we see and hear.

The media as a whole has set standards that desensitize us to the laws and precepts of YAH by making things such as violence, sex, homosexuality, and other tangibles look very appealing to the mind. When this influence started it may not have reflected all of societies true feelings, however society with each progressive generation is conforming more and more to the media’s message, which helps make up and change the current world values.

Simply put the things we take in are what we store in our mind, and they will influence our behavior. Therefore, in the scripture we will see the word Spirit used where the word mind in the english vernacular would be applied, but it’s really talking about one in the same.

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of Elohim. (Romans 12:2 RNEB)

The heart is the seat of our emotions, which in Hebrew is the word LEB. The heart in itself is not independent, it operates based on the things we desire, which is determined by what we feed our mind. The mind conceives the thought and the heart or emotions serves as a storage area for that thought whether it is clean or unclean. An unholy or holy spirit cannot make us do anything, though they can influence our thoughts based on our own desires, nevertheless we will always be held responsible for any resulting works.

I have written to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of Elohim remains in you, and you have overcome the evil one. Don’t love the world, neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s. The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does Elohim’s will remains forever. (1 John 2:14-17 RNEB)
For I testify about them that they have a zeal for Elohim, but not according to knowledge. For being ignorant of Elohim’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they didn’t subject themselves to the righteousness of Elohim. (Romans 10:2-3 RNEB)
