The Mind Heart Connection III

The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the manifestation of the Spirit specifically focusing on one aspect of its multiple meanings. Many Theologians, Hebrews, and Christians alike teach on topics driven by unique cultural words which may have several meanings and connotations. It’s important to understand that a single word can have multiple meanings, and is a rule in most languages, including Hebrew, therefore we need to be careful to take this into consideration when studying the scripture. Sadly, Christian and Hebraic bodies examination of New Testament studies are often in error, frequently injecting felicitous slants and obscure words because they lack the understanding of how a word with multiple meanings is used and the message the author intended. Therefore, we will be addressing the following questions among others.

  • What is the heart?
  • What is the conscience?
  • What prompts an emotion?
  • What part does the mind play?
  • What is a willing mind?
  • How do obtain a perfect and complete state of mind?
  • Who are the wicked?
  • How does the law help us walk in righteousness?
  • How will we be judged?

This is the third and final part of this series, and there are many things we still need to understand from the scriptures as we look at the processes that YAH has ordained for mental wellness. If we have mental wellness, there will be a sense of it in our conduct and words. We will look at another aspect of the Ruach of the Spirit as documented in the scriptures. Placing everything in context so we can have a full understanding of what YAH is saying to us.

What we can understand so far is the vast majority of the wounds and problems we have today are self inflicted. These problems have caused a separation between ourselves and YAH. Therefore, we are doing is a very definitive analysis on the mind, the most sensitive part of the body. The mind controls everything that we do and the things that we say. Before we can have a feeling it must start in the mind as a thought, when we receive that thought it will prompt an emotion which will conceive a work. Elohim submits us to tests to see what’s in our heart, and if we will keep His commandments. It’s by our reactions to these tests that YAH knows if he has a faithful servant.

It happened after these things, THAT ELOHIM TESTED ABRAHAM, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.” (Genesis 22:1 RNEB)

All Elohim’s servants will be tried, if we’re under the blood and YAH has accepted us as a disciple we will be tested, sadly not everyone will pass the test. YAH has commanded and instructed us on the matters we need to know to pass the trials and obtain eternal life. These things must be learned, understood, and applied in order for us to succeed.

He said, “Now take your son, your only son, whom you love, even Isaac, and go into the land of Moriyah. Offer him there for a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you of.” Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. He split the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went to the place of which Elohim had told him. On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place far off. Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go yonder. We will worship, and come back to you.” Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. He took in his hand the fire and the knife. They both went together. Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, “My father?” He said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “Elohim will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they both went together. They came to the place which Elohim had told him of. Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, on the wood. Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to kill his son. The angel of YAH called to him out of the sky, and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.” He said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy, neither do anything to him. FOR NOW I KNOW THAT YOU FEAR ELOHIM, SEEING YOU HAVE NOT WITHHELD YOUR SON, YOUR ONLY SON, FROM ME.” (Genesis 22:2-12 RNEB)

This was a test to see what was in Abraham’s heart, Elohim needed to know what was in Abraham’s mind to be sure he was truly a faithful servant. How many people today if put in the same situation would have offered up their child? This probably seems like a foolish question, however the tests we’re put through today are not much different, he may not use a child, but the circumstances may require just as strong a commitment to prove our faithfulness. In these situations we can learn just as much about ourselves as Elohim does, we just need to be willing to see it. Many will fail these trials and never receive the reward, those who remain and are steadfast in the faith will endure to the end and inherit the promise.

What type of mind is it that wavers from the truth and constantly deviates from the plan of salvation?

The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at the end of it they should stand before the king. (Daniyel 1:5 RNEB)

They wanted to feed Daniyel, Chananyah, Misha’el, and Azaryah the kings food for three years and get them fat, so they could stand in the presence of the king.

Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniyel, Chananyah, Misha’el, and `Azaryah. The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniyel he gave [the name of] Belteshatzar; and to Chananyah, [of] Shadrakh; and to Misha’el, [of] Meshakh; and to `Azaryah, [of] `Aved-Nego. BUT DANIYEL PURPOSED IN HIS HEART THAT HE WOULD NOT DEFILE HIMSELF WITH THE KING’S DAINTIES, NOR WITH THE WINE WHICH HE DRANK: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Now Elohim made Daniyel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs. The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniyel, I fear my master the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? so would you endanger my head with the king. Then said Daniyel to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniyel, Chananyah, Misha’el, and `Azaryah: Prove your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Then let our faces be looked on before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s dainties; and as you see, deal with your servants. So he listened to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. At the end of ten days their faces appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths who ate of the king’s dainties. (Daniyel 1:6-15 RNEB)

The Hebrew children were taken prisoner after the fall of Yisrael to Babylon, these four were among the wisest men of Yisrael so they were assigned to serve the King of Babylon as council. One of the first things they did was rename the Hebrews after their pagan deities.

Nevukhadnetzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits, and the breadth of it six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babel. Then Nevukhadnetzar the king sent to gather together the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nevukhadnetzar the king had set up. Then the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together to the dedication of the image that Nevukhadnetzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nevukhadnetzar had set up. Then the herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, peoples, nations, and languages, that whenever you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music, you fall down and worship the golden image that Nevukhadnetzar the king has set up; and whoever doesn’t fall down and worship shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music, ALL THE PEOPLES, THE NATIONS, AND THE LANGUAGES, FELL DOWN AND WORSHIPED THE GOLDEN IMAGE THAT NEVUKHADNETZAR THE KING HAD SET UP. Therefore at that time certain Kasdim came near, and brought accusation against the Jews. They answered Nevukhadnetzar the king, O king, live for ever. YOU, O KING, HAVE MADE A DECREE, THAT EVERY MAN THAT SHALL HEAR THE SOUND OF THE HORN, FLUTE, ZITHER, LYRE, HARP, PIPE, AND ALL KINDS OF MUSIC, SHALL FALL DOWN AND WORSHIP THE GOLDEN IMAGE; AND WHOEVER DOESN’T FALL DOWN AND WORSHIP SHALL BE CAST INTO THE MIDST OF A BURNING FIERY FURNACE. There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babel: SHADRAKH, MESHAKH, AND `AVED-NEGO; THESE MEN, O KING, HAVE NOT REGARDED YOU: THEY DON’T SERVE YOUR ELOHIMS, NOR WORSHIP THE GOLDEN IMAGE WHICH YOU HAVE SET UP. Then Nevukhadnetzar in [his] rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrakh, Meshakh, and `Aved-Nego. Then they brought these men before the king. Nevukhadnetzar answered them, Is it on purpose, Shadrakh, Meshakh, and `Aved-Nego, that you don’t serve my elohim, nor worship the golden image which I have set up? Now if you are ready whenever you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music to fall down and worship the image which I have made, [well]: but if you don’t worship, you shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that elohim that shall deliver you out of my hands? SHADRAKH, MESHAKH, AND `AVED-NEGO ANSWERED THE KING, NEVUKHADNETZAR , WE HAVE NO NEED TO ANSWER YOU IN THIS MATTER. IF IT BE [SO], OUR ELOHIM WHOM WE SERVE IS ABLE TO DELIVER US FROM THE BURNING FIERY FURNACE; AND HE WILL DELIVER US OUT OF YOUR HAND, O KING. (Daniyel 3:1-17 RNEB)

The ordinance that King Nevukhadnetzar had declared would cause any of the Hebrews that bowed their knee to break Elohim’s first two commandments. Notice, there were only three found among all the people that refused to bow their knee. The rest of the Hebrews that were among the people obviously bowed their knee to the false idol. The three faithful servants had a mind that was truly covenanted with YAH, and his laws and precepts were their foremost concern above all else. We our put frequently in situations where we have to make a choice on whether we will compromise and break the precepts and laws of YAH or remain faithful.

But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your elohims, nor worship the golden image which you have set up. (Daniyel 3:18 RNEB)

They clearly stated they would be faithful to YAH and his covenant to their death.

The anger of YAH was kindled against Yisra’el; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not listened to my voice; I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Yahoshua left when he died; THAT BY THEM I MAY PROVE YISRA’EL, WHETHER THEY WILL KEEP THE WAY OF YAH TO WALK THEREIN, AS THEIR FATHERS DID KEEP IT, OR NOT. So YAH left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Yahoshua. (Judges 2:20-23 RNEB)
Now these are the nations which YAH left, to prove Yisra’el by them, even as many [of Yisra’el] as had not known all the wars of Kena`an; only that the generations of the children of Yisra’el might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing of it: [namely], the five masters of the Pelishtim, and all the Kena`anim, and the Tzidonim, and the Chivvi who lived on Mount Levanon, from Mount Ba`al-Chermon to the entrance of Chamat. THEY WERE [LEFT], TO PROVE YISRA’EL BY THEM, TO KNOW WHETHER THEY WOULD LISTEN TO THE COMMANDMENTS OF YAH, WHICH HE COMMANDED THEIR FATHERS BY MOSHE. (Judges 3:1-4 RNEB)

YAH wanted to know what was in their minds and heart, and he wants to know what’s in ours today. He’s going to determine what’s in our mind and heart by the works that we do in response to the adversity we endure.

All the commandment which I command you this day shall you observe to do, that you may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which YAH swore to your fathers. YOU SHALL REMEMBER ALL THE WAY WHICH YAH YOUR ELOHIM HAS LED YOU THESE FORTY YEARS IN THE WILDERNESS, THAT HE MIGHT HUMBLE YOU, TO PROVE YOU, TO KNOW WHAT WAS IN YOUR HEART, WHETHER YOU WOULD KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS, OR NOT. (Deuteronomy 8:1-2 RNEB)

The word of Elohim is not going to work if we’re hard headed. It’s the soft pliable ground that bears fruit, not the rocky ground. Part of the testing process is used to make us humble, the day we acknowledge, we’re a nobody, will be the day we become a somebody, because we will be open to receive instructions from Elohim. The problem is that everyone believes they’re a somebody, being full of pride and arrogance. We will not get far in life in terms of peace, comfort, and stability if we keep this type of mind set, because it will generate emotions that will become part of our character, once they become part of our character, we will react in this manner habitually which is very difficult to overcome.

He humbled you, and allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna, which you didn’t know, neither did your fathers know; that he might make you know that man does not live by bread only, BUT BY EVERYTHING THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF YAH DOES MAN LIVE. Your clothing didn’t grow old on you, neither did your foot swell, these forty years. YOU SHALL CONSIDER IN YOUR HEART THAT AS A MAN CHASTENS HIS SON, SO YAH YOUR ELOHIM CHASTENS YOU. YOU SHALL KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS OF YAH YOUR ELOHIM, TO WALK IN HIS WAYS, AND TO FEAR HIM. (Deuteronomy 8:3-6 RNEB)
Yahshua, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Yarden, AND WAS LED BY THE SPIRIT INTO THE WILDERNESS (Luke 4:1 RNEB)

The Spirit led him into the wilderness, it was a planned event, it didn’t occur by chance. When Yahshua was possessed with the Spirit, he became the anointed, and he had to be tried and tested.

FOR FORTY DAYS, BEING TEMPTED BY THE DEVIL. He ate nothing in those days. Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry. (Luke 4:2 RNEB)

If we make the commitment to follow YAH, by being purified in the name of Yahshua the Anointed, which is how we enter the covenant in this age, we will be tested. The trials we go through will be to see if we will keep his commandments, precepts, and ordinances. If we don’t know them, haven’t received them, or don’t understand them in our mind, we won’t pass the test.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of Elohim, command this stone to become bread.” (Luke 4:3 RNEB)

The tests we go through will generally be to see if we fulfill some carnal need or desire. There are spiritual forces that are familiar with what’s in our mind and emotions because we have already spoken and acted on them at various times. They will use these weaknesses to entice and seduce us by making them appear even more appealing and convenient, so they can try to get us to turn away from the truth, break the covenant. They can’t make us sin, we always have the ability to walk righteously, however the desire that drives us into a carnal act can feel over whelming, it’s an intangible force that feels very real when the pressure is being applied inwardly from our own emotions.

Yahshua answered him, saying, “It is written, ’Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of Elohim.’” (Luke 4:4 RNEB)

The anointed responded by quoting Elohim’s word from the book of Deuteronomy, the fathers word is always “you shall or shall not”, and if we stand steadfast on his word as Yahshua did we will not be enticed. This requires that the laws and precepts of Elohim are part of our character, which means learning, understanding, and applying them.

The devil, leading him up on a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. The devil said to him, “I WILL GIVE YOU ALL THIS AUTHORITY, AND THEIR GLORY, FOR IT HAS BEEN DELIVERED TO ME; AND I GIVE IT TO WHOMEVER I WANT. (Luke 4:5-6 RNEB)

Satan could not offer something if it wasn’t in his power to give them. These had been given to him, and he was offering them to Yahshua in exchange for his submission.

If you therefore will worship before me, it will all be yours.” Yahshua answered him, “Get behind me Satan! For it is written, ’You shall worship YAH your Elohim, and him only shall you serve.’” He led him to Yerushalayim, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of Elohim, cast yourself down from here, for it is written, ’He will give his angels charge concerning you, to guard you;’ and, ’On their hands they will bear you up, lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.’” Yahshua answering, said to him, “It has been said, ’You shall not tempt YAH your Elohim.’” When the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until another time. (Luke 4:7-13 RNEB)

Satan tempted Yahshua with three deadly sins, the lust of the flesh, the pride of life, and the lust of the eyes. Chavah (Eve) fell to the same three sins that Yahshua successfully turned away from. Again, Elohim’s going to test every person before they can inherit eternal life, to see what’s in their mind, and what they will do when presented with a choice. YAH wants faithful and obedient people!

Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly, and then out of the body? BUT THE THINGS WHICH PROCEED OUT OF THE MOUTH COME OUT OF THE HEART, AND THEY DEFILE THE MAN. (Matthew 15:17-18 RNEB)

The heart is just an organ that pumps blood, however the mind is the womb of the body, which is where our emotions and ultimately our works are conceived.

FOR OUT OF THE HEART COME FORTH EVIL THOUGHTS, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies. These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn’t defile the man.” (Matthew 15:19-20 RNEB)
Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment. For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn’t stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. Indeed, we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body. Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires. So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. SEE HOW A SMALL FIRE CAN SPREAD TO A LARGE FOREST! (James 3:1-5 RNEB)

The tongue can kindle a great fire, this is the reason we find in the law, “you shall not go up and down as a tail bearer among your people”. One of the seven deadly sins is sowing discord among the brethren. This all leads back to the mind, what would cause someone to do things like this?

And the tongue is a fire. THE WORLD OF LAWLESSNESS AMONG OUR MEMBERS IS THE TONGUE, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehinnom. (James 3:6 RNEB)

The tongue is a world of iniquity, a world to itself. However, it is manipulated by the mind, the words we speak are one of the works of our hand. It starts in the mind, then it produces feelings, which ultimately leads to a related work. The undisciplined tongue is controlled and manipulated by the mind, the whole body becomes corrupted as a result of the mind.

For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind. BUT NOBODY CAN TAME THE TONGUE. IT IS A RESTLESS EVIL, FULL OF DEADLY POISON. With it we bless our Elohim and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of Elohim. Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send out from the same opening fresh and bitter water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water. WHO IS WISE AND UNDERSTANDING AMONG YOU? LET HIM SHOW BY HIS GOOD CONDUCT THAT HIS DEEDS ARE DONE IN GENTLENESS OF WISDOM. (James 3:7-13 RNEB)

We should be able to discern and determine if someone is a child of the covenant by their works, the things they say and do.

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. FOR WHERE JEALOUSY AND SELFISH AMBITION ARE, THERE IS CONFUSION AND EVERY EVIL DEED. BUT THE WISDOM THAT IS FROM ABOVE IS FIRST PURE, THEN PEACEFUL, GENTLE, REASONABLE, FULL OF MERCY AND GOOD FRUITS, WITHOUT PARTIALITY, AND WITHOUT HYPOCRISY. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. (James 3:14-18 RNEB)

If we don’t commit ourselves to Spiritual excellence, we will never be whole.

Help, YAH; for the reverent man ceases. For the faithful fail from among the children of men. Everyone lies to his neighbor. THEY SPEAK WITH FLATTERING LIPS, AND WITH A DOUBLE HEART. (Psalms 12:1-2 RNEB)

These are dangerous people, normally we will see them being very polite and even smiling yet their mind is corrupt, so we shouldn’t be fooled by their outward mannerisms. These individuals have a double heart, which is the same thing James was writing about when he said a double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

May YAH cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that boasts, who have said, “With our tongue we will prevail. Our lips are our own. Who is master over us?” (Psalms 12:3-4 RNEB)
Hear my law, my people. Turn your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable. I will utter dark sayings of old, Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of YAH, his strength, and his wondrous works that he has done. For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Yisra’el, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; that the generation to come might know, even the children who should be born; WHO SHOULD ARISE AND TELL THEIR CHILDREN, THAT THEY MIGHT SET THEIR HOPE IN ELOHIM, AND NOT FORGET THE WORKS OF ELOHIM, BUT KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS, AND MIGHT NOT BE AS THEIR FATHERS, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that didn’t make their hearts loyal, WHOSE SPIRIT WAS NOT STEADFAST WITH ELOHIM. The children of Efrayim, being armed and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. THEY DIDN’T KEEP ELOHIM’S COVENANT, AND REFUSED TO WALK IN HIS LAW. They forgot his doings, his wondrous works that he had shown them. He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Tzo`an. He split the sea, and caused them to pass through. He made the waters stand as a heap. In the daytime he also led them with a cloud, and all night with a light of fire. He split rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink abundantly as out of the depths. He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers. (Psalms 78:1-16 RNEB)

The more YAH did for Yisrael the more they sinned. It appears the more we do for someone, the less they seem to appreciate it.

Yet they still went on to sin against him, to rebel against the Most High in the desert. They tempted Elohim in their heart by asking food according to their desire. Yes, they spoke against Elohim. They said, “Can Elohim prepare a table in the wilderness? Behold, he struck the rock, so that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed. Can he give bread also? Will he provide flesh for his people?” Therefore YAH heard, and was angry. A fire was kindled against Jacob, anger also went up against Yisra’el, because they didn’t believe in Elohim, and didn’t trust in his salvation. Yet he commanded the skies above, and opened the doors of heaven. He rained down manna on them to eat, and gave them food from the sky. Man ate the bread of angels. He sent them food to the full. He caused the east wind to blow in the sky. By his power he guided the south wind. He rained also flesh on them as the dust; winged birds as the sand of the seas. He let them fall in the midst of their camp, around their habitations. So they ate, and were well filled. He gave them their own desire. They didn’t turn from their cravings. Their food was yet in their mouths, when the anger of Elohim went up against them, killed some of the fattest of them, and struck down the young men of Yisra’el. For all this they still sinned, and didn’t believe in his wondrous works. Therefore he consumed their days in vanity, and their years in terror. When he killed them, then they inquired after him. They returned and sought Elohim earnestly. They remembered that Elohim was their rock, the El `Elyon, their redeemer. BUT THEY FLATTERED HIM WITH THEIR MOUTH, AND LIED TO HIM WITH THEIR TONGUE. FOR THEIR HEART WAS NOT RIGHT WITH HIM, NEITHER WERE THEY FAITHFUL IN HIS COVENANT. But he, being merciful, forgave lawlessness, and didn’t destroy them. Yes, many times he turned his anger away, and didn’t stir up all his wrath. HE REMEMBERED THAT THEY WERE BUT FLESH, a wind that passes away, and doesn’t come again. (Psalms 78:17-39 RNEB)
How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert! They turned again and tempted Elohim, and provoked the Holy One of Yisra’el. (Psalms 78:40-41 RNEB)

The Hebrew word ruach is often translated spirit, however it has several different meanings. Lets review those meanings and see how we properly determine the authors intent.

The Hebrew word for spirit used in this verse is Ruach which means wind, breath, mind, spirit, as a seat or organ of mental acts, moral character, breath of air, as energy of life in man and animal, emotion and divine being of the godhead family. So, how do we distinguish what meaning to use? When the word Spirit (Ruach) was translated by the Gnostics, they did it without qualifying which of the meanings properly applies. To distinguish the proper meaning we first need a firm understanding of the scripture from Genesis to Malachi, secondly understanding who the author of the epistle or book was, and finally we need to read it in proper context.

Did then that which is good become death to me? May it never be! But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful. FOR WE KNOW THAT THE LAW IS SPIRITUAL, but I am fleshly, sold under sin. (Romans 7:13-14 RNEB)

The law dwells in a persons mind, this is the reason why the patriarchs told us to meditate on the word day and night. If the law is Spiritual and the root of “Spiritual” is Spirit, the law is a Spirit. It’s an intangible, yet it acts like a force when applied.

For I don’t know what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do. But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good. So now it is no more I that do it, BUT SIN WHICH DWELLS IN ME. For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good. For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice. But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me. (Romans 7:15-20 RNEB)

David told us we were conceived in sin, but do we give ourselves over to sin? Our minds tell us one thing and the flesh something else. The flesh will speak to us, it will entice us, it will heighten our emotions to strengthen the feelings of pleasure and desire, however the mind that is focused on the laws and precepts of Elohim will be able to stop this before the emotions that would normally occur lead to a work, which is what we will be judged by.

I find then the law, that, to me, while I desire to do good, evil is present. FOR I DELIGHT IN ELOHIM’S LAW AFTER THE INWARD MAN, (Romans 7:21-22 RNEB)

The inward man is the mind and conscience. The mind triggers our emotions, works, and passion. Therefore, if we should delight in Elohim’s law, and the law is spiritual, what is the law? It’s Elohim’s word, his laws, ordinances, and commandments.

but I see a different law in my members, WARRING AGAINST THE LAW OF MY MIND, and bringing me into captivity UNDER THE LAW OF SIN WHICH IS IN MY MEMBERS (FLESH). What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death? I thank Elohim through Yahshua the Anointed, our Master! SO THEN WITH THE MIND, I MYSELF SERVE ELOHIM’S LAW, BUT WITH THE FLESH, I AM A SLAVE OF SIN’S LAW. (Romans 7:23-25 RNEB)

We serve the laws of Elohim with our mind, and sin’s law with the flesh. If we can free our mind the rest will follow. The flesh can’t do anything the mind does not allow. So, how do we free the mind?

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, BUT THOSE WHO LIVE ACCORDING TO THE SPIRIT, THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT. (Romans 8:5 RNEB)

If our mind is set on the things of the flesh, we live according to the flesh, however if we set our mind on the things of the spirit, we live according to the spirit. Now we already learned the law is spiritual, so if we set our mind on the things of the law, that would be the same as setting our mind on things that are spiritual. Therefore, we see that it’s only by learning, understanding, and applying the precepts of Elohim, that we can be free from sin.

For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace; BECAUSE THE MIND OF THE FLESH IS HOSTILE TOWARDS ELOHIM; FOR IT IS NOT SUBJECT TO ELOHIM’S LAW, NEITHER INDEED CAN IT BE. (Romans 8:6-7 RNEB)

The fleshly mind is one of misery, peace can only come from YAH’s laws, precepts, and code of ethics. There are many religious leaders promoting a prosperity gospel, they spend their time emphasizing what scripture calls the lusts of the flesh, it’s all about what can be had. The only true prosperity is gained by focusing on the laws and precepts of Elohim, walking righteously before the father, then, and only then can we truly receive the prosperity YAH’s word prescribes, which comes as the reward for righteousness.

Sha’ul was clearly equating the Spirit with the laws of Elohim by telling us the law is Spiritual. The law is a spirit because it’s an intangible, an unseen mechanism or force that we commit ourselves too so we can produce a righteous work.

Those who are in the flesh can’t please Elohim. (Romans 8:8 RNEB)

If we’re in the flesh we can’t please Elohim, since we’re only thinking about what we want, with no concern of how Elohim is viewing us. This happens when we have no fear of Elohim, the reason there is no fear is we lack knowledge, and what little knowledge we do have, comes without understanding, and if we had any understanding at all it was never applied, so there was no transformation.

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, IF IT IS SO THAT THE SPIRIT OF ELOHIM DWELLS IN YOU. BUT IF ANY MAN DOESN’T HAVE THE SPIRIT OF THE ANOINTED, he is not his. (Romans 8:9 RNEB)

The Spirit, in the context of this verse is the word of Elohim.

If the Anointed is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him who raised up Yahshua from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up the Anointed Yahshua from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if you live after the flesh, you must die; BUT IF BY THE SPIRIT YOU PUT TO DEATH THE DEEDS OF THE BODY, YOU WILL LIVE. (Romans 8:10-13 RNEB)

We already learned the law is Spirit, so this is saying, if we through the law put to death the deeds of the body, we will live. One of the things Yahshua said was, “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.” (john 6:63)

FOR THE WORD OF ELOHIM IS LIVING, AND ACTIVE, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, AND IS ABLE TO DISCERN THE THOUGHTS AND INTENTIONS OF THE HEART. (Hebrews 4:12 RNEB)

The word of Elohim is living and capable of dividing flesh and mind. It’s only by separating the desires of the flesh from the thoughts of the mind that we can truly overcome the flesh. We accomplish this by learning, understanding, and applying the word of Elohim, his commandments, precepts, and code of ethics.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of Elohim, these are children of Elohim. (Romans 8:14 RNEB)
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU, AND LEARN FROM ME, for I am gentle and lowly in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 RNEB)

We need to learn from Yahshua by following his example of having the laws of Elohim in his mind. If we do, it will deter us from doing anything that’s unclean or unhealthy. Therefore, just as Yahshua only spoke and acted on the laws of Elohim, we should do the same.

If there is therefore any exhortation in the Anointed, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tender mercies and compassion, make my joy full, by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind; doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others. HAVE THIS IN YOUR MIND, WHICH WAS ALSO IN THE ANOINTED YAHSHUA, (Philippians 2:1-5 RNEB)

We must have in our mind the very same thing Yahshua had in his, which is the laws and precepts of Elohim. Remember, Yahshua said to follow and learn from him.

When I came to you, brothers, I didn’t come with excellence of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of Elohim. For I determined not to know anything among you, except Yahshua the Anointed, and him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. My speech and my preaching were not in persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith wouldn’t stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of Elohim. We speak wisdom, however, among those who are full grown; yet a wisdom not of this world, nor of the rulers of this world, who are coming to nothing. But we speak Elohim’s wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom that has been hidden, which Elohim foreordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this world has known. For had they known it, they wouldn’t have crucified Master of glory. But as it is written, “Things which an eye didn’t see, and an ear didn’t hear, which didn’t enter into the heart of man, these Elohim has prepared for those who love him.” But to us, ELOHIM REVEALED THEM THROUGH THE SPIRIT. FOR THE SPIRIT SEARCHES ALL THINGS, YES, THE DEEP THINGS OF ELOHIM. For who among men knows the things of a man, except the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so, no one knows the things of Elohim, except Elohim’s Spirit. But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from Elohim, that we might know the things that were freely given to us by Elohim. Which things also we speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual things. Now the natural man doesn’t receive the things of Elohim’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to him, and he can’t know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Corinthians 2:1-14 RNEB)

Scripture says a carnal mind cannot serve Elohim because it is not subject to the law of Elohim. A spiritual mind discerns things spiritually [by the word of Elohim] but the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of Elohim because they are foolishness to him.

But he who is spiritual discerns all things, and he himself is judged by no one. “For who has known the mind of YAH, that he should instruct him?” But we have the Anointed’s mind. (1 Corinthians 2:15-16 RNEB)

Sha’ul said, “if the Anointed dwells in you” and in this verse he says “to have the mind of the anointed”. If we have the anointed dwelling in us why would we need his mind? These verses both refer to the same thing, Sha’ul’s entire discourse is dealing with having a mind that is centered on the code of ethics of YAH, being able to obtain the level of righteousness and perfection that Yahshua demonstrated by being perfect in the laws of Elohim.

But there is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding. (Job 32:8 RNEB)

What is this Spirit (Ruach) in man?
Don’t we receive understanding in our mind?

Job is saying that there is the breath of life in man and the inspiration of Elohim gives him understanding.

(for when Gentiles who don’t have the law do by nature the things of the law, these, not having the law, are a law to themselves, in that they SHOW THE WORK OF THE LAW WRITTEN IN THEIR HEARTS, their conscience testifying with them, and THEIR THOUGHTS AMONG THEMSELVES ACCUSING OR ELSE EXCUSING THEM) (Romans 2:14-15 RNEB)

The law, through our conscience is internally judging decisions that we have made reactively. If we have a spiritual mind, that is a mind like the anointed, which we can obtain by following Elohim’s code of ethics, then this is what will take place, and we will find ourselves pulling away from acts of iniquity.

in the day when Elohim will judge the secrets of men, according to my Good News, by Yahshua the Anointed. (Romans 2:16 RNEB)
for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify Elohim in your body and in your spirit, which are Elohim’s. (1 Corinthians 6:20 RNEB)

We need to be careful in the way we apply the word Ruach (spirit) in scripture, we need to be able to determine if it’s talking about an actual Holy Spirit or about the mind which stimulates the emotions.

This verse cannot be talking about a Holy Spirit because a holy spirit glorifies Elohim already. This is saying to glorify Elohim in our body and our mind. Therefore, spirit here in this application would be speaking of the mind.

For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead. (James 2:26 RNEB)

Spirit in this verse is talking about the “breath of life” the oxygen infused by YAH into the body to give it life. Though it’s an intangible force, it’s not a separate entity dwelling in the body. For a more detailed examination see the study series called Mans Journey.

Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of Elohim, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to Elohim, which is your reasonable service. Don’t be conformed to this world, BUT BE TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWING OF YOUR MIND, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of Elohim. (Romans 12:1-2 RNEB)

To transform our mind, we must renew it with the laws and precepts of Elohim. Sha’ul told us, “with the mind, I myself serve Elohim’s law, but with the flesh, I am a slave of sin’s law.” (Romans 7:25) However, the body can never do any more or less than what the mind allows, so if we’re serving the laws and precepts of Elohim, it is impossible for us to fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

Forasmuch then as the Anointed suffered for us in the flesh, ARM YOURSELVES ALSO WITH THE SAME MIND; for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin; that you no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of Elohim. For we have spent enough of our past time doing the desire of the Gentiles, and having walked in lewdness, lusts, drunken binges, orgies, carousings, and abominable idolatries. They think it is strange that you don’t run with them into the same excess of riot, blaspheming: (1 Peter 4:1-4 RNEB)

If we can change our mind, we will be different. Therefore, if we can adopt Elohim’s way of thinking, we will exhibit his thoughts, desires, and actions in our life. Scripture says “the world would love its own”, however we’re not of the world.

If then you were raised together with the Anointed, seek the things that are above, where the Anointed is, seated on the right hand of Elohim. SET YOUR MIND ON THE THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE, NOT ON THE THINGS THAT ARE ON THE EARTH. For you died, and your life is hidden with the Anointed in Elohim. When the Anointed, our life, is revealed, then you will also be revealed with him in glory. Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry; for which things’ sake the wrath of Elohim comes on the children of disobedience. You also once walked in those, when you lived in them; BUT NOW YOU ALSO PUT THEM ALL AWAY: ANGER, WRATH, MALICE, SLANDER, AND SHAMEFUL SPEAKING OUT OF YOUR MOUTH. DON’T LIE TO ONE ANOTHER, SEEING THAT YOU HAVE PUT OFF THE OLD MAN WITH HIS DOINGS, (Colossians 3:1-9 RNEB)

Once we make the choice to follow the anointed and enter the covenant through water purification, we must set our mind on the things above, which are the laws and precepts of Elohim. If we don’t, we won’t be able to put to death the things of the flesh. Apparently, the people Sha’ul was writing too were not showing any outward change after being purified, so he was telling them to put these things away.

and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge after the image of his Creator, (Colossians 3:10 RNEB)

None of us has seen the creator, and knowledge of him can only be found in the first five books of the bible and the testimonies of the prophets. The way we change our mind is by meditating on the books of Genesis through Malachi. This is what Yahshua did and what Sha’ul said he was doing.

but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, the Anointed; from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love. This I say therefore, and testify in YAH, THAT YOU NO LONGER WALK AS THE REST OF THE GENTILES ALSO WALK, IN THE FUTILITY OF THEIR MIND, BEING DARKENED IN THEIR UNDERSTANDING, ALIENATED FROM THE LIFE OF ELOHIM, BECAUSE OF THE IGNORANCE THAT IS IN THEM, BECAUSE OF THE HARDENING OF THEIR HEARTS; WHO HAVING BECOME CALLOUS GAVE THEMSELVES UP TO LUST, TO WORK ALL UNCLEANNESS WITH GREEDINESS. BUT YOU DID NOT LEARN THE ANOINTED THAT WAY; IF INDEED YOU HEARD HIM, AND WERE TAUGHT IN HIM, EVEN AS TRUTH IS IN YAHSHUA: THAT YOU PUT AWAY, AS CONCERNING YOUR FORMER WAY OF LIFE, THE OLD MAN, THAT GROWS CORRUPT AFTER THE LUSTS OF DECEIT; AND THAT YOU BE RENEWED IN THE SPIRIT OF YOUR MIND, and put on the new man, who in the likeness of Elohim has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth. Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another. (Ephesians 4:15-25 RNEB)

We must be renewed in the law or spirit of our mind. It’s only by giving place to the laws of Elohim in our mind that we can successfully renew our mind and be transformed. It’s the worldly elements in our mind that cause insecurity, pride, vanity, and contentious type behaviors, because we our under the belief that we’re something more than we actually are.

The Conscience

The conscience is our awareness of a moral or ethical aspect of conduct together with the urge to prefer what’s right over what’s wrong. A source of moral and ethical judgment or pronouncement, conformity to ones own sense of right conduct. The part of the super ego psycho-analysis that judges the ethical nature of ones actions and thoughts and then transmits such determinations to the ego for consideration.

When the governor had beckoned to him to speak, Sha’ul answered, “Because I know that you have been a judge of this nation for many years, I cheerfully make my defense, seeing that you can recognize that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Yerushalayim. In the temple they didn’t find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the synagogues, or in the city. Nor can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me. But this I confess to you, that after the Way, which they call a sect, so I serve the Elohim of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the Torah, and which are written in the prophets; having hope toward Elohim, which these also themselves look for, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. HEREIN I ALSO PRACTICE ALWAYS HAVING A CONSCIENCE VOID OF OFFENSE TOWARD ELOHIM AND MEN. (Acts 24:10-16 RNEB)

We need to always have a conscience void of offense and realize it’s the word that must guide our conscience. There is only one way to offend Elohim and that’s by breaking his commandments.

This is a symbol of immersion, which now saves you–not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, BUT THE ANSWER OF A GOOD CONSCIENCE TOWARD ELOHIM, THROUGH THE RESURRECTION OF YAHSHUA THE ANOINTED, (1 Peter 3:21 RNEB)
He isn’t greater in this house than I, neither has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. HOW THEN CAN I DO THIS GREAT WICKEDNESS, AND SIN AGAINST ELOHIM?” (Genesis 39:9 RNEB)

Yoseph is talking to Potifars wife who was trying to seduce him. Yoseph considered Potifars wife’s sexual advance great wickedness because his conscience would not allow him to even consider this action, since his mind was aligned and fortified with the laws of Elohim. Our conscience governs and direct our actions based on the standard we set by learning, understanding, and applying the laws and precepts of Elohim. We must remember our conscience is our mind, but it’s a culmination of the mind and emotions.

But the Spirit says expressly that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons, through the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, BRANDED IN THEIR OWN CONSCIENCE AS WITH A HOT IRON; (1 Timothy 4:1-2 RNEB)

If our conscience is seared, we won’t have a moral guideline of right and wrong. The conscience is a culmination of the mind and emotions that comes together to produce a judicative entity on our behalf. YAH designed and created us with a conscience as an internal guide, that’s why Sha’ul said in Romans 2:12 that “their conscience testifying with them, and their thoughts among themselves accusing or else excusing them.”

When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you; put a knife to your throat, if you are a man given to appetite. Don’t be desirous of his dainties, seeing they are deceitful food. DON’T WEARY YOURSELF TO BE RICH. IN YOUR WISDOM, SHOW RESTRAINT. Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky. Don’t eat the food of him who has a stingy eye, and don’t crave his delicacies: FOR AS HE THINKS about the cost, so he is. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you. (Proverbs 23:1-7 RNEB)

As we come to the end of this study let me leave you with one final example and encouragement.

and delivered righteous Lot, WHO WAS VERY DISTRESSED BY THE LUSTFUL LIFE OF THE WICKED (for that righteous man dwelling among them, was tormented in his righteous soul from day to day with seeing and hearing lawless deeds): (2 Peter 2:7-8 RNEB)

Lot dwelled in the midst of lawlessness and interacted with it daily, but walked as a righteous man. Therefore, we know it’s possible not to be influenced by the lawless, it’s only the weak minded individuals that will fall in these situations. The only way we can overcome being weak minded is by meditating on the laws and precepts of Elohim day and night. We must take the time to learn his word, understand it, and properly apply it.

If Lot can walk righteously among the wicked, anyone can if they truly desire to serve YAH with all their heart.
